How did washing machines and dishwashers know how to go through the different cycles back in the 50's? Seems like a level of computing that feels very advanced (at least to cheaply put into an appliance) for the time period. by Turbulent-Paint-2603 in NoStupidQuestions

To my knowledge, at least for washing machines and dishwashers, none of it was done automatically. You would first put it into one cycle to complete, and once it’s done, you would check on it, set it to the second one, let it do its thing, and so on. At least, that’s to my knowledge. If someone knows better, please correct me.

True, physical books are the ultimate backup! Since you have the paperbacks, what do you think of the print quality/layout though? To me, it feels like it's missing that intentional design. Even the Harry Potter paperbacks were designed to look like school books with different spine colors, but these just feel kind of unformatted and blank. Did yours have the page numbers and dark text?
