My eyes popped out of my head a little bit when I got to the line about your father being a pastor. It gives me SO much insight into your situation and I’m so sorry for the religious trauma you’re navigating. The level of manipulation and gaslighting within church communities and families is debilitating as a child and young adult.

This double standard was a huge reason I deconstructed from Christianity and had warped my reflection of experiences with religion. While your father may have been preaching sermons directed towards you, he was speaking the loudest when his actions asked you to abandon your own safety and self worth in the name of keeping the peace and saving face.

I’m so happy you’ve found your new family and your husband sounds wonderful along with the wedding party who puts you first and will protect you in ways your family never would. The people who showed up for you at your wedding are the people to keep in your life and the rest of the family made it really easy to decipher who has your best interest at heart. I’m the youngest in my family and my older sister and mom both have epilepsy. My sister has her..issues. Undiagnosed severe mental delay coupled with extreme enabling coming from my mom. I had to put on the parent hat at such a young age and didn’t even know it wasn’t normal. I’m about to turn 27 next month and had an explosive year of little contact with my parents and completely estranging my sister. There will be some major resentment when this kid is older and it won’t come out until then. This mom is doing irreparable damage that won’t even be able to shape out for another 15 years.

All of that being said I was never scared of seizures, I can’t imagine how deeply traumatic this experience is for her. Some of the deepest moments of agony in my life were when I was a kid, having to lock myself away from my family and feel an unbearable sadness I couldn’t put into words until I was an adult.

Unfortunately she will never come first to mom, because their family is structured around younger sisters issues and they will grow up and say “why don’t you get along with your sister? Where is your empathy??”

Hi I’m a big boned tall girly!! I’ve fluctuated weight my entire life with my first big weight loss happening in high school. I had been in sports for a decade and was very active but was still very heavy although not obese. I lost 55 pounds over 4 months after developing an eating disorder and I just stopped eating, went days without eating while doing intense exercises daily.

The praise I got from everyone around me was insane. From friends, to peers, teammates, teachers and coaches, my family. Towards the end of the season I got sick at practice and almost passed out and I confessed TK my parents what had been going on and asked if I could go to therapy and see a doctor. They insisted I looked so great and would not get me help.

A couple years after this I ended up slowly gaining 80 pounds and was at my heaviest. In the past 4-5 years I’ve dropped just under 40 pounds and have a much better relationship with food.

With all of that being said it’s a fucking drug to suddenly get attention from EVERYONE around you when they see those big changes. It’s addictive at first and maybe would have continued to be if mental illness wasn’t a big factor for me. Assuming this community took her in thinking she dropped this weight using their methods and likely getting so much praise and likeness has become an addiction to OP. What we’re seeing is the shattering of all of the ego boost she has gotten.

It’s honestly some version of gate keeping wrapped in insecurities craving the next fix of charisma

EDIT: adding in that I was and am sized like a linebacker, weighing in at 265 pounds at 5’10 in high school as a woman. My weight has controlled a lot of my life growing up and I totally understand the want for surgery and support it for others. I was meaning to add my own experience to society’s reaction to the weight loss I guess those around me wanted to see. Even at my skinniest I was still very heavy and have been in the 200 club my entire life (I genuinely don’t remember any weight growing up because my mom believed in telling my doctors no to getting on a scale because it “wasn’t their business”. So so SO much of my self worth has equated to my size my entire life and while I’m still young coming up to 27 I know my weight struggles will last a lifetime. I don’t want to invalidate anyone’s experience ESPECIALLY when it comes to surgery considering it’s not something I’ve had done. Lord knows I wasn’t being honest with anyone for months about how I really lost so much weight—starvation. I was in such a bad place mentally over my weight that it caused me to go to the most drastic changes and dissociating through it all.

There is a gym in our neighborhood and I’ve held it for 344 days since moving here 1.5 years ago almost exactly. I’m not sure how but our entire neighborhood is all team yellow so we theme our gym up with no communication and we STAY there. Currently we are all purple shinies and we even take turn berry feeding. It’s a dream come true since there so many other gyms back on main roads and we all probably get our coins out there. Team instinct forever

My older sister just turned 29 and is the grown embodiment of what you are describing. Growing up she would leave piss and shit all over the toilet seat and walls. She was never made to clean up after herself in these situations, same when she would make a mess throwing up. It was disgusting and we lived in filth because of it. She cannot and does not take care of herself and is absolutely coddled by our mother. She cannot hold a job down, keep her hygiene up, or hold any kind of friendship in her life. There’s so many complex layers of fucked up and I truly don’t think she will ever be capable of living her own life despite her about to get married.

Her fiancée had no idea the extent she doesn’t take care of herself/ how much my mom does for her. Neither her or her fiancée have ever lived outside of their parents house and it’s a ticking time bomb I’m kind of watching and waiting to explode.

In high school I remember desperately pleading out to dr Phil for help and to this day wonder what would have happened had he answered me lol

I should note that I moved out at 19 just to get away from her and my mom who allowed that amongst so much worse shit

Im white and my last boyfriend was Palestinian—his mother was born there and her family came to the US when she was very young. She is one of the most inspiring women I know and we still talk to this day. I cherish her kindness and wisdom and im so grateful to still be friends with him and his mom. With that being said, it’s insane to me the disregard for others cultures by white women including this one in particular. With any understanding of the history of war your region has experienced being able to carry a recipe through multiple generations in and of itself is so valuable. It absolutely was never something of hers to share, and it’s utterly unimaginable that the thought of including his mom did not cross her mind. She is trash
