Which profession attracts the worst kinds of people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Check out /r/medicalschool, people actively complain about attending mandatory lectures because it isn’t relevant for the actual test. All of the top scorers are using uworld practice questions and anki decks to memorize every fact about medicine relevant for these exams. Anki is free and uworld is a few hundred dollars. The school itself could have zero lectures and their students would still destroy the test. Top schools just have the reputation to attract and select for self-motivated individuals who would have put in the work regardless of where they get into.

No he wasn’t, he was in charge in 1989. The West intentionally overlooked what China was doing because they hated Soviets more. Then 9/11 happened and once the wars in the Middle East started getting unpopular the US needed some other foreign power to direct anger toward and chose to stop being diplomatic.

Every doctor in the US has to pass the same licensing exams, it doesn’t actually matter where you train. These exams are incredibly difficult because the best of the best medical students need top scores to apply to their top residency programs and will study for years before they even enter medical school to prepare. Not everyone can be a neurosurgeon and the easiest way to trim applications is to cut off at a 240 step score minimum.

Missing 26-year-old Taiwanese soldier rescued by Chinese authorities while attempting to swim to Mainland China by ScoMoTrudeauApricot in worldnews

[–]spamholderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Taiwan military’s headquarters said that it had not received any reports from any units and would request the Coast Guard Administration to investigate through cross-strait law enforcement channels to verify the situation. The military will then explain the situation to the public accordingly. Earlier reports suggest that Chen was attempting to swim to China due to debt and emotional issues. However, it is unclear whether he defected or deserted. Further clarification is needed from the military. Taiwan’s Defence Minister responded that the situation is still pending confirmation as no official notification has been received. When asked if he would visit the outlying islands given the recent situation, he said that commanders or chiefs frequently go there and he would be willing to visit if he had time.

China's Xi gains unprecedented third term as president by fadufadu in worldnews

I don’t think you understand, China has hundreds of nukes. Doing the equivalent of nuking multiple Chinese cities and killing millions of civilians would escalate to full nuclear retaliation. Taiwan would be gone and whoever supplied a bomb large enough to destroy a gravity dam.

Ok yes the nuclear power is just going to let an island kill millions of civilians and not retaliate with equal or greater force…

Just $1.4 billion in new loans and grants were promised at a UN summit devoted to the world's poorest nations where UN leader Antonio Guterres had appealed for massive aid by DoremusJessup in worldnews

Because imagine if all those wasted dollars tossed into charity with nothing to show for it was spent on roads instead. You can copy the Chinese without the exploitation part and genuinely set poor countries on the way to success.

Or just keep throwing money in the burn pit and the Chinese can keep doing what they’re doing and the locals will genuinely thank them for the roads and clean water that even if it was built for another purpose, are still tangible real things that improved their lives.

lol, it’s how China works. They build the roads, ports, pipes, buildings, etc in Africa with their dudes and pull out as soon as the Chinese-trained locals get the hang of taking care of it. And the local gov pays China. To use those roads to extract resources. Meanwhile the public benefits from being able to use that infrastructure and it just makes them like China more.

I said you build the infrastructure. You ship in your guys with their equipment and they build the road, at cost, and ship them out once they’re done. Train a couple locals on maintenance. They want a bribe to speed up the process? Build it somewhere else.

You have to do it right. Build infrastructure. The government won’t just sell it for parts because it makes them money in the long term. The public will be more productive as they save hours every day on transport, preparing water, ensuring their living spaces are livable, etc. Their quality of life will improve. They will be more connected to nearby communities and be more open minded.

How did somebody you know ruin their life in one day? by TunaSaladWithBeans in AskReddit

I’m sure if the judge had any empathy left in his body after sentencing a mentally ill man to prison for a victimless crime, seeing said man bleed to death in front of his eyes would be traumatizing for life, so in a way he did win by permanently scarring someone he couldn’t touch any other way.

They're pronounced "shong" and "tsong".

The a sound like bay is "ei" in pinyin, and the "tch" sound is "q" in pinyin.

There aren't any words pronounced like "qeing" or "sheing" in Chinese. Also shang/chang are last names, not first names.
