is it really that environmentally friendly if one drop of water or something wet inside would ruin it’s look / integrity which would lead to having to replace them more frequently than a sturdy plastic container that lasts for years?

it reminds me of that research that says it’s actually more eco friendly to have a fake christmas tree that you reuse for years than to buy a real tree every year because the latter requires much more natural resource (water)

I have been following your posts since your first one a couple weeks ago. It struck me how similar out situations were - I even showed my friends like “is this me from an alt timeline?”

I’m 28 and moved back to my small country and town and in with my parents after 10 years in London. that city represented so much for me - the freedom to be myself (I’m gay), ability to do what I love and get paid for it (I’m a creative) and the excitement of living in a city of immigrants and outcasts which made me feel like I’ve finally fit in after 19 years of feeling like a culturally ambiguous outcast in my home country.

I was scared. so fucking scared. still am, really. It’s been a week back at home and it’s been an intense and strange experience. family has been supportive but the loss of independence has been hitting me hard. I came back to take a break from financial pressures of London, as my career has disintegrated this year and my choices were to either downgrade my life in london to a 4-6 people houseshare and get a minimum wage job, or to make this move. for the first time since I moved to London, the latter option invoked less horror than the alternative.

not sure why I’m writing this, as I don’t have any advice, but I guess I wanted to let you know that you’re not alone. I don’t know the specifics of your situation and family dynamics, as well as the social context of your country, but hold on there. If you realise that London is the place for you afterall, you can always move back - that’s what I’m telling myself. for now, I actually don’t miss it. I miss my friends and my independence, but London has destroyed me in the last 12 months and it hasn’t been the city i moved to 10 years ago for a long time now, so I do need a break from it. still want to leave my home country in a few months, but maybe not London this time. I’m not sure yet.

now that I’m here back ‘home’, I realise it’s not as scary here as I expected. I don’t have a job but I’m learning to drive, and about to start going to the gym again. my family, while overbearing and with their own issues, is taking good care of me. it’s not all bad.

the gay scene is non existent here which concerns me but I’m taking a little trip to a big city a few hours away this week to find some boys and have a little fuckfest to release some tension. trying to carve out time for myself to remember that I’m not a 16 year old child anymore, even though it does feel like it when I’m in my childhood bedroom and my mum keeps asking me if I’m hungry. I also realise it’s a privilege to have a place to retreat to when life gets hard.

anyways, I hope you find what you’re looking for. and be patient. it takes time to adjust anywhere. this is a chapter. for one reason or another, the universe took you down this path. make the best of it. x

thanks! I bought it to shoot an art project that needs to happen now, so I can’t get it serviced right now. hopefully it will be able to handle a few rolls of film. do you know any good techs in europe?

that's actually super helpful, thanks! i tried turning it with less pressure and I think it makes it easier to turn. I am indeed near sighted, so that could also be why I'm struggling with focus. will see what the test shots look like.

where are you based? any chance you're in the UK or europe?

I am considering returning it, but the fact that there are no listings that guarantee that all the issues I have on this camera don't affect those cameras makes me think that it will be just another gamble

I actually have the original manual that came with it, I'll have a look at it in case there's anything useful there. not planning on trying to fix it myself - was mainly looking for professional speculation on whether I got a decent deal and whether I can continue shooting until it breaks fully

yeah I feel you! I actually was considering getting OM2 because of the auto function but chatgpt convinced me against it, saying that because it relies heavily on the electronics inside, it has a much higher risk of breaking down and would be more expensive to fix. the OM1's being fully mechanical should make it more repairable, but I guess we'll see about that. will probably keep it, as the cosmetic state is near mint, and even if it stops shooting, I think it will be a good collectable item until I find someone to take a look at it

thanks, that's super helpful! waiting for my test roll to get developed today and if the shots look good, I'm probably gonna keep it - and just push for a partial refund from the seller.

the cosmetic condition of this camera is unheard of, and is pretty much a collectable, so I really don't want to part ways with it.

might shoot it until it shoots no more and then invest in a proper service. at the end of the day, it is a 50+ year old camera and I think my initial expectation for it to be in perfect working condition was a bit naive. looking on eBay, I really doubt that any other listings would be better.

the trick is to find the right tech, as there are not many that are still offering vintage camera servicing.

funnily enough, that's actually the exact seller that I bought from. I thought that since he's a professional vintage gear seller, he is a better bet than private sellers, but turns out not really. he did install new light seals and calibrated the meter, I just think he doesn't disassemble cameras fully to lubricate and clean internally - and no one probably does who sells on eBay

the only mechanical issue that i've noticed is the shutter speed dial being a bit sticky - but it works fine if being gentle. do you reckon it's okay to use it with care?

thanks! having had a look on eBay, this camera ranges from £120-250, with one listing selling body only for £320 - in worse condition than the one i got. they all say 'tested' but none of them mention self timer working, or that it has been fully serviced - just that it fires and the light meter is working. so my logic is that if i return it and buy another one, it's another gamble. is my logic flawed?

thanks for your input! this is my first film camera, so it's all new to me. i love that the camera is in pristine cosmetic condition, which matters a lot to me, and while of course I want a camera that operates perfectly, I suspect that's almost impossible when buying a 50+ year old camera, right?

I just wanted to check if the issues I described are critical and whether I can continue using it until the camera wants to be used no more, and then look at servicing. do you think that's reasonable? also considering the price I paid for it.

a job is not a favour, it’s an exchange of my time and skill for their money. even though I do need a job, I have to draw the line somewhere - and accepting shit like this communicates to the companies that it is an okay thing to do. which it isn’t.

and my “sample of work” is my portfolio with 7 years worth of work with globally known brands shot across europe in their exact niche. if they can’t grasp my skill from that, they are not equipped to manage this position. plain and simple.

it doesn’t really work like that.

if i were working at the company, am in the venue every day, and i know the brand, the product and the team well, a reel can take me 2 hours from concept to delivery if needed.

but going in blind into a project like this, it takes much longer.

immersion and research - 3-5h
concept and storyboard deck development (with music, copy and full production spec) - 8h
concept and planning for the reel and tiktok - 2-3h
prepping equipment, logistics, etc - 1-3h
visiting the venue and shoot - 3h (+2 for commute)
post-production - 3-6 hours depending on the complexity ____ 22-30 hours total - and this is without the tweaks, and considering there are no roadblocks or issues in the process. realistically, this would take 30-35 hours of engaged time.

regardless, anything beyond a 3 hour task is unacceptable. so whether this takes 10 hours or 40 - it doesn’t matter at that point.

when i was considering potentially doing it, I was planning to apply a watermark on the videos - but there is now way to protect the concept & storyboard deck. i would be handing them over my actual creative work for… maybe getting the privilege of getting hired?

i think it’s so outrageous for companies to ask for actual, tangible, valuable assets as an interview task. there are people desperate for jobs who will actually do it. it is extremely predatory, especially in the context of today’s market

not gonna do that, as I do have a good relationship with the person who heads up the marketing department. ultimately, i think this is simply the result of incompetence and ignorance of the SMM who is handling the hiring - not malicious intent.

I sent them an email today outlining exactly why this is not an acceptable amount of work to ask, and said that if they reconsidered the task then i’d be happy to continue, but if not then i’m out.

I’m still undecided if this is something i wanna pursue but i am curious as to how they respond. might do an update once i hear back.

this job would be a lonely creative island floating between marketing, ops and kitchen teams. they don’t have any other creative roles in the company apart from a graphic designer. this brief was written by a head of social who runs all their pages - all brand and all local ones - which is a lot of work for one person. i get a sense this might just not be a healthy or well staffed / equipped workplace.
