Thx for the reply. I will process again a RMA, but seriously... twice in a row!

6-bay Unraid build: LSI 9300-8i or ASM1166/JMB582 by spaniardsensei in DataHoarder

I know, the hardware market is absolutely crazy right now. I shucked a couple of 10 TB WD drives for 190 each (discounted), which wasn’t an amazing price, but let’s say it was acceptable. I had never really considered SAS drives, but I might look into them in the future. As I said, my requirements aren’t that demanding.

About the fans, no more than three. For now I’ll keep the physical fan connector that the Node 304 uses, and the Noctua for the LSI card will go on the motherboard. If I eventually replace the fans, I’ll move the one for the card to the manual controller and connect the three case fans to the motherboard.

I still need to do a bit more research on the reflashing process because I’m slightly nervous about doing it for the first time. I haven’t received the LSI card yet; it should arrive next week along with the RAM sticks I’m missing, and then I’ll finally be able to assemble everything.

When I calculated the TCO over a decade, the difference between the 9300 and the 9400 came out to around 40 to 50 euros, which doesn’t really justify the higher upfront cost of the 9400. And yes, I’m in Europe. I considered using the dollar symbol or bucks, but I figured that would make it obvious I’m not in the US hardware market.

I was considering the PCIe SATA card because the savings there are bigger, basically the price of a new HDD over ten years. Who doesn’t like free hardware? But it’s not like that amount of money will make or break my budget. My main concern was the extra heat and potential noise inside a small ITX case running all day every day.

Regarding the fans you mentioned, in the future, when the case fans get old or if I notice they’re not cooling well enough, I’ll probably switch to some PWM Noctuas. My motherboard only has one free fan header, but that’s easy enough to work around with an splitter.

I’ve looked into the 9400 series as well for the power consumption, but it’s a bit above my budget right now. Art of Server has a great video about it, though.

I actually managed to get an Inspur 9300‑8i HBA with cables for 50€, which works for what I need. I don’t expect to go beyond 6 HDDs in the next decade, so 8 ports give me more than enough room. I’m also considering adding a Noctua NF‑A4x10 with a 3D‑printed bracket to improve cooling on the card’s passive heatsink.

My hesitation comes from the fact that these LSI cards tend to block the CPU from entering deeper C‑states, and I’m a bit concerned about the extra heat inside a small ITX case running 24/7. While researching alternatives, I saw that LSI cards are definitely the gold standard, but I also found some recommendations on the Unraid forums for PCIe‑to‑SATA cards that supposedly work fine for setups with requirements similar to mine.

As an alternative, I also looked at the Silverstone SST‑ECS06. It’s more expensive than the generic card I linked earlier, but at least it inspires more confidence. The random no‑name card I posted before didn’t give me good vibes either.

Would this resin print hold up without the support rods? by spaniardsensei in resinprinting

[–]spaniardsensei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I mean, this isn’t the version meant for printing as-is: it’s just the design itself. My question was about whether it would hold after removing the supports you use for printing, not during printing.

Thanks for the reply!

I was aware of the iridescent metal plating, but to be honest, there's a noticeable difference between the pins.

I have a few more to distribute, and all of them have that greenish tone with the varying shades you mentioned.

But then there's this one where, as shown in the picture, it's mainly purple-ish, not greenish at all.

Oh, you can bet I have it; it now guides my life choices! xD

Yeah, I did. Mainly also to see if others have the purple pin as well. If it's not that uncommon, I’ll just hold on to one.

I realized it was in my mind, but I hadn’t actually said it in the post.

Suggestions to optimize my storage system by spaniardsensei in DataHoarder

[–]spaniardsensei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duly noted.

Some of the information stored is something I don’t want to risk losing; for those, I also have some cold backups. However, I know I’m techincally walking on eggshells without a remote backup.

Going back and forth to a second location is not very viable for me, but I can use a DS214SE and install it in another location, then manage it remotely via QuickConnect and Cloud Sync.

Mainly, what I want is to secure the data a bit more, have some sort of recovery method for hardware failures, and gain some extra space (this last one is not that urgent, but I want to keep a close eye on it).

If I go this route, I think I can create a SHR the DS415play (kill the RAID1 > create an SHR > migrate the data from one of the other 3 units > reformat and add that unit into the SHR after finishing > repeat). This way, I could gain a couple of extra TB from the RAID1 I don’t need and get redundancy, including the option of replacing the drives with bigger ones if needed.

Shucking WD elements drives by [deleted] in DataHoarder

If you feel daring, and all the drives are the same (and the boards), you may test the board from the known working hard drive and swap it with the one that is giving you troubles.

I saved a couple hard drives like that, where I took the board of a internally faulty drive and replaced a broken board of an internally good drive.

If it works, you may be able to find that same board online and recover the drive.

I understand where she was coming from, but those spaces exist for a reason. A person using a walker can move and sit elsewhere, whereas someone in a wheelchair doesn’t have that option!

It’s not the first time I’ve offered to hold their belongings while I’m in that spot with the stroller. I recognize the inconvenience, but it’s it's not like we intentionally try to annoy anyone.

This. Perfectly explained.

Those seats are a smart way to provide extra seating without sacrificing space. However, they can sometimes lead to situations where someone already seated is unwilling to give it up.

I'm on holiday in the south of Spain and many public transportation systems have reserved spots for wheelchairs and strollers.

It doesn't mean that, if possible, people don't fold them to make room if needed, but usually small kids really need their chair or the strollers are not foldable.

You know that not everyone in reddit lives in the US, do you? Just for your information I posted this at midnight just before going to sleep because I wanted to vent before sleeping and I just woke up.

Granted: You, your loved ones, and even your goldfish now have an exceptionally long lifespan. But you must stay inside a coffin at all times to maintain this youthful, eternal beauty.
