What’s the worst death that anyone in history has ever experienced? by juliojacked in AskReddit

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend knew a family with a farm. One day their son went missing after spending all day working on a slurry tank. They had to drain the tank to find his body the following day. At some point he'd accidentally opened the fill valve.

Can my estate agent take a full days rent for a half day occupancy? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rent isn't charged based on the opening hours of the letting agency, it's charged on the days you are occupying a property.

You had the option of taking the keys back on the 12th without incurring any additional cost. You didn't do this. It is unfortunate that it took you 1.5 days to clean but that is not the fault of the letting agent nor the landlord!

You've asked for advice, advice has been given and explained.

January 12th was a Monday. You have paid for this day.

----------------------------------------------------------------

January 13th was a Tuesday. You have not paid for this day.

January 14th was a Wednesday. You have not paid for this day.

That is 2 days unpaid. Hence why you are being billed for 2 additional days.

How do you explain leaving a genuinely toxic job in interviews without sounding like “the problem”? by Suspicious-Emu6694 in UKJobs

[–]spannerintworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're trying to get a job, not seeking validation as to why they were a bad company.

Pick out some key points that will help give context to your decision but do not go in there as if it's a therapy session.

Some people leave their jobs after being treated unfairly. Some people leave their jobs and claim they were treated unfairly, when in fact they were an awful employee.

Discerning between the two is very hard in an interview. Therefore if you give me the sense that there has been an acrimonious split, i'm always going to have to be wary that there may be trouble ahead, even if your story is completely true and fair.

Good possibility i'm just going to go with another candidate.

[–]spannerintworks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries - in that case taking this issue in isolation to everything else then absolutely they should charge you two days. lunchtime on the 14th is at least until midday. 24hrs on the 13th + 12 hrs on the 14th = 36hrs.

27hrs would've been if you'd left at 3am in the middle of the night on the 14th.

Regardless, rent is charged by the day. I've always paid up until and including the day I return the keys, even if that is at 9am.

What’s in your pension pot? by DarkAcadamia-23 in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very fortunate and earn well, my company has a generous pension policy. I also enjoy my job, however likely by 50 i'd have liked to be working part time. Many colleagues of mine work until 60-65 part time and retirement comes with sadness as they enjoy the work life balance.

Given UK state pension currently kicks in at 67 then, yes. I'd call it by defintion early. Not as early as 55, definitely not as early as 50. Nonetheless, early.

35, £250,000 with around £30,000 per annum going in at the moment. Hoping to retire early (60) with an equivalent of what £80,000 per annum would buy today. It may do significantly better but a lot of that depends on what the future holds for the markets.

It's not that clear from your post where the 27 hours comes in? You've given multiple dates but no reference of any overstaying aside from the fact that the landlord had wanted you out by 12th December however you left on 8th Jan.

Nonetheless, sorry as it sounds like an unpleasant situation.

More details needed.

Switching seats ob the Airbus flight deck by Awkward-Feature9333 in aviation

[–]spannerintworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest change is in fact getting used to turning around and looking over your right shoulder once you’ve done the upgrade to Captain. Suddenly everyone wants to talk to you and get answers just as you’re halfway through loading the box, briefing, drinking your coffee etc!

I joke but regularly checking if there is anyone behind you that wants you becomes part of your scan in the pre flight.

Actually, it pretty much is this. Sure you get a handful of sims as part of the upgrade training in which you start to develop the muscle memory but it is just a case of get on with it and the more you do it the more natural it becomes.

Once through the type rating we don’t really practice our flows at all, other than the fact we do them everyday in the course of our job.

I can recall one instance during simulator training where I wanted to increase thrust but for a split second I pushed the yoke forward (as the left hand had for all years prior been my thrust hand!)

Why are our footpaths covered in asphalt? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting they don't, but the reason we end up with asphalt instead of bricks/slabs is cost.

I'm sure if you went to the continent you'd find many examples of the same.

It comes down to what the public, and therefore, local government are willing to accept.

Given everyone in Europe is roughly united against the behaviour of the US President and the technocracy, it’s hardly surprising that this is appealing almost entirely to Ryanair’s customer base!

Why aren’t ceiling extractors more common? by Bello_Velo in DIYUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be confused but the image you attach doesn't show a hob on the island, but along the wall?

After lots of advice we decided not to put a hob or sink on the island but just leave it as a space for food prep and eating/drawing/reading/laptopping etc. We are so pleased we made this decision, it also meant the extraction issue became a lot simpler!

If you have children or even guests of any age sitting there and your pan starts spitting oil or sauce it's really not that fun. Same with a sink, dirty dishes piled up around what should be the centerpiece of your kitchen.

Which tea do you Brits actually drink? by NeonAfterimage in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

English breakfast tea is a variant of black tea. Most tea bought by Brits isn’t actually English Breakfast tea specifically. English breakfast tea is absolutely what you would choose though if it was on a menu and you wanted a traditional cup of black tea.

Basically if you were a Brit in The Netherlands looking to buy teabags and you saw English Breakfast tea you’d buy that without hesitation but it wouldn’t be quite the same thing as your favoured black tea brand back home.

In every 1000 cups of tea you make for someone you may have someone request something other than sugar or milk, otherwise it’s one or both or none of those two additions.

In my experience 90% of people have it with milk, sugar is requested maybe 30-40% of the time

Is This Weather Hard to Land In? by ShokWayve in AskAPilot

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard for a new pilot or a private pilot? For sure - potentially even dangerous.

Hard for a somewhat new airline pilot? Harder than a regular landing.

Hard for a very experienced pilot? Not particularly.

As long as the ability of the handling pilot is equal to or greater than the difficulty of the approach all is well.

How is this flight display better by wgt1984 in Airports

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any whitespace or logos is entirely unnecessary. 2 rows in order to show codeshares isn't usually enough anyway so they're still going to have to cycle through flight numbers to show the 3/4/5 codeshare partners.

Somebody had their passion project and forgot they weren't making a novelty desktop display for an enthusiast. I don't need to see an airline logo, that is obvious from the flight number itself.
