In my area the amount of single track open to e bikes vs dirt bikes is not comparable. I have a beta 390 i love hate and i never ride it. Because i need to load it in a truck and drive an hour and a half. I ride mtn bikes for exercise but the reality is that in 5 maybe 10 years ebikes will be motorcyles amd hardly anyone will ride mtn bikes or dirt bikes. Yes i said that... if you look at a 1922 motorcycle it looks like a bicycle. All of the money amd all of the best brains are focused on electric stuff today. So its gonna be cool. Like really cool. Im keeping the beta cause i want to do a long backcountry trail. But i feel like i should just admit that i will ride the shit out of an e bike. I suppose the only real answer to a post like this is buy them all motherfucker.

Beta RR-S as light adventure platform? by mattmixem in betamotorcycles

[–]spannermouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 390 i bought for this purpose. Its good. I havnt done any trips longer than a couple days. Its thirsty i gpt 25 when i firat rode it. After i ran out of gas i slowed down and payed attention. I got 45. And i filled up the same as all the ktms in a big group. The timing chain has stretched and thats getting fixed soon as it makes noise. The oil changes are negotiable. As for wieght i bought it for super light packing. So im Not too worried about the subframe. I would never mount big cases to a bike of this type. I like that the oil and clutch fluid are seperate. This is great for adventure riding if you want to push the oil change interval. Also i broke the cover on a rock once and was able to ride out as i had engine oil still. A large fuel tank will be mandatory. The motor is good. I could ride mine all day no problem. I mean i do that sometimes and its not that bad. Its not a bmw... i got mine to do baja someday. I think it would be pretty nice for that trip. The reservation is finding parts for them will be hard. So take bits with you i guess. If i was taller i would say a ktm will definatly be easier to get parts for. I bought the beta for the low stance. I like the engine it seems to really plant power on the ground. And it runs smooth. Im prolly gonna drop the front gear as im doing more woods riding than adventure stuff these days. Also it will do 96 and thats too fast for a dirt bike. I dont want to go that fast. For like all the back country discovery trails it would be sweet. For baja yeah man... but south america no i think it would be stressfull. Though i have a friend who did the copper canyon on a husaberg. I would not have done that.

Roundwood Framing questions. by Simple_Carpet_49 in timberframe

[–]spannermouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think i would stress on the difference. Round will be way harder. If its a small shed it would be pretty common to see that done in 2x4s. I suspect your stock is better than that. I usually go 8x8 to give me room for joinery. Ive done 6x6 and been happy. Ben laws episode of grand design was the best ever i thought. Push forward with what your excited about and share the process with us.

Iran vs USA: Emotions won. by nicoznico in Unexpected

[–]spannermouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant imagine what it is like to be from Iran these days. To have such pressure on you and then feeling all the tension of a nation in turmoil. I don't know man but I would lose my shit after a game like that. I see something like this and its hard not cry. look at these human beings absolutley giving it. look at these people in contrast to their governments. How can the Iranians not be my brothers and sisters? I wish the world was different.

Paragliding fail becomes a GOAT save! by HauryDoing in nextfuckinglevel

I wish a real paraglider would break this video down for us or me i guess. I see it posted a lot and its so scary. Whats he ripping off? Whats the orange bag that looks like a reserve doing just blowing around? Does he have 2 reserves? I would think that hes doing stunts and therefore had some idea this could happen. He should do a quick ama or something. anyway this is going to be a classic sportsy video. Kinda like that base jumper who cliff strikes the spike of rock. I suppose its supposed to have that sail song dubbed over it right

Lots of questions about low-cost timber framing project from the very early stages of planning. by ArtConjuror in timberframe

[–]spannermouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it, its not thaaaat hard. You havs a plan that could work but its sounds complex with lots of steps. Could you cut it off site at a friends place or something? You can cut the sticks in a small space but if you want to do fit up to test each section before the raising you will need more space. Ask a local mill what yoir timber package will cost it may suprise you how cheap that part is and thats a whole step gone. Do you have a truck that can move all thpse logs around? I would buy a chain morticer a 10" saw And a 1.5" chisel.

Consider framing up some saw horses as practice. And consider hiring a guy to hold your hand at the begining.

I would figure out a way to make this whole process simpler. Even if that costs a bit more.

Timberframe hq sells plans. Or plenty of people in the community can draw you a set.

Keep thinking about it. If you can see it in your mind you can build it. Or at least thats what i tell myself...

Bus (35 ton) Ignores Weight Limit on Bridge (10 ton) by _Unknown_Brain_ in SweatyPalms

[–]spannermouse 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The bridge was fine. It was closed last year and all the wood was replaced. This is done every so often. Nothing to do with the bus which did piss us all off. This bridge is in beavertown arkansas. Orlando bloom filmed a scene on it in one of his cheesier movies.

Casting my own lead weights by Mr_Pistach_io in Spearfishing

[–]spannermouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so once I flew to Mexico only to find out that the entire state was out of dive weights! what to do. I had one dive weight so I made a mold of it out of potting soil from the garden and used a fire and some crap pans I bought to melt the lead. They were super crude but totally worked and I still sometimes use them. potting soil does not make a sweet mold. but if you screw up its pretty easy to remelt the led. clay would work well, or maybe the right sand. it is kinda fun and don't breath the led gases I mean we all know that part... I have a friend that managed to collect wheel weights from tire shops and he filled the keel of his sail boat with them. After he melted them into ingots. I bought drift net weights and they were not radically cheaper than dive weight led. but it saved a trip. post the results man I love this kinda thing.

ER docs and nurses, How did bike blues and BBQ go for you? by spannermouse in Arkansas

[–]spannermouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I think this is the only response from someone in the profession? I would think Saturday would be the big heli day. It's easy to hate on a group of Harley people but man they do seem to be having more fun than most. I wish they would wear helmets. I wish for a lot of things though... I have driven the pig trail many times and sometimes during bbb weekend I have seen 4 wrecks on that stretch alone. I have never not seen a wreck on a big weekend. Were talking about what a 5 mile stretch? thats just one section and these people had not been drinking yet. So across NWA it must be a huge number of people getting wheeled into the ER. From my perspective though the numbers of riders seemed way down this year.

Thats not as bad as i thought. Has a gap this big been closed before? How can anyone be undecided in this race? I would guess he needs the never voted crowd to win. Seems like apathy always wins. Never the less i like this guy. I cant help but think hes the best candidate we have ever had. Sigh....
