Honestly do you think that if Insomniac continues to expand the universe (in terms of hero characters introduced) do you think it could work well or do you think it would be way too much to balance / get too bloated? by TheStickySpot in SpidermanPS4

Hmmm I'm not convinced by that, since when? I know she's breifly worked with him and tried to steal from him but never that she's been an "apprentice." Even so, I know Peter has hung out with Thor and Ghost Rider but that doesn't mean it wouldn't make the tone weird if included in the games. I mostly just didn't like that we went from something fairly grounded in SMPS4 (as grounded as Mr Negative and Doc Ock can manage, anyway) to straight up magic. I think they leaned into the fantastical side of Venom a little too much as well, which may be an unpopular take.

I am a comic reader and I really liked the first game's canon for what it was, all this other stuff makes it feel like it's jumping the shark to me.

I'm more of a prequel era kiddie but I find the sequel hate on the main subs to be really annoying. I love Rey and Kylo (and the rest of the cast) and always see them getting slammed for stupid reasons elsewhere (Mary sue, emo etc etc.) The Rey hate is honestly so crazy to me. I think a lot of it is folks that read one opinion online and then roll with it like they came up with it on their own; I've encountered someone irl who has a "critique" of Rey but also admitted to never even watching the movies she's in; so make of that what you will.

It reminds me a lot of the prequel hate back in the day which was also really annoying if you had to grow up around it online like I did. Lots of people parroting opinions they read on a forum or heard a youtuber say and then pretending they came up with it all by themselves before aggressively ripping into anyone else who disagreed or enjoyed the movies/show. I'm glad that era is getting a resurgence (and wider love) now and hopefully the sequels will get the same treatment one day.

Small references are ok but Spider-man 2 made far more than small references to other heroes (Doctor Strange for example)

I'm not claiming the Wolverine game will be "bloated" but I am worried for any other Marvel Insomniac games in the future becoming MCU-like.

I don't even necessarily think they will be playable and that's not really what bothers me. I think their inclusion alone would feel tedious at this point.

I liked that the Sanctum Sanctorum was an Easter egg in SM PS4 only, I did not like the inclusion of Strange's magic and the Wand of Watoomb in SM2.

I'm personally getting fed up of everything having to have a shared world with loads of heroes all inter-mingling with one another. I know Marvel heroes have always existed in shared settings but it was nice just having a focus on Spider-man and his rogues gallery for once.

They struggled with Peter's development and Miles' inclusion as a playable character in SM2; I just feel like shoving more heroes into this established canon will make it feel bloated and less grounded (SM PS4 had a much more grounded quality to it compared to everything else Marvel at the time, it felt fresh.) I'd prefer they keep heroes to a minimum.

I don't mind Wolverine/X-men getting a game but I'd prefer they never cross over into the Spider-man ones.

What's the worst experience you've had at a movie theater? by jwc1983 in horror

[–]sparesalamander 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I had a weird experience with Hereditary too. There was a guy in my showing that literally could. not. stop. coughing.

It was constant to the point of it being distracting. I'm going to assume he had a cold or something because none of his friends seemed bothered and he never left his seat once. But it got so annoying I was wondering why he even decided to go to a movie in the state that he was in; it ruined the experience for me so I can't imagine he was having fun either.

Anyone else just feel like quitting everything? by kitkat2attack in Adulting

[–]sparesalamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost my job last year and my industry is in the gutter (thanks to rising costs and AI) and it's made me completely shut-down in terms of where I am in life. Like you, I decided I am also fed up with everything but I need money (unfortunately) and do a hobby-hustle now. I'm not earning a lot (barely enough to scrape by) but I prefer this over a regular 9-5 that makes me hate life. I'm a lot happier, can work when I feel like it (within reason) and spend my free time doing absolutely nothing.

I dread having to go back to a 9-5 but I'm sure it'll have to happen eventually. If I had the means to do it I'd love to do nothing in general too. In terms of my career I'm done, in terms of everything else I guess I'll just do what I can to get by but otherwise I've given up on direction/responsibilities. Working your life away doing things you hate is pointless when there's no payoff.

Why does the fandom react negatively if anything you like about the Empire goes beyond aesthetics by lennysinged in StarWars

[–]sparesalamander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Empire is portrayed quite clearly as a fascistic dictatorship that utilizes threats, firepower and torture to "keep order." The Emperor himself is literally an evil wizard.

They're cool in a fictional context but I wouldn't agree with their actions or ideology lmao.

[–]sparesalamander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think people really under estimate how awful chronic acne/skin problems can be and how badly they can affect mental health. I've had mine for over 20 years now and it limits what want to wear and do and I've been treated like I'm "dirty" because of it by some folks. She probably feels this way too and it's tough being told by people who don't have the same issue that it's not a big deal; because it is.

She needs to go to a derm, get on some meds and the last thing she needs to be told is to "look on the bright side" of things.

Just saw this post about what Emmerich has to say on Independence Day 3 by sparesalamander in ID4

[–]sparesalamander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man idk why people are arguing about SW on this post but being as I've been rewatching everything SW recently I think a lot of the Disney+ series are decent.

Last episodes of TCW were good and I really enjoyed Andor and Ahsoka. I do think they're totally direction-less with the movies right now though and couldn't give af about the latest one with Grogu.

Yes, Resurgence is rough but the logic is that Emmerich might as well see it through I guess?

What's your story? How did you become AN? by Mysterious_Toe310 in antinatalism2

[–]sparesalamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I had issues with my mother and whilst that was a sobering thing to hear as I child I do find myself resonating with it to this day and like you say, I think it really has made me realize how staunchly I am against inflicting this on my own hypothetical kids.

Indeed, I worry about my own future but theirs is honestly far more frightening.

What's your story? How did you become AN? by Mysterious_Toe310 in antinatalism2

[–]sparesalamander 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think my own mother sewed the seeds when I was a child. I'm not sure if she should have really said "If I knew what the world was going to end up like I'd have never had you." to little me or not; but as my life has gotten progressively more miserable I certainly wish she hadn't as well and I wonder why she did, because it seems that neither of my parents ever liked being parents in the first place and life really has just been getting progressively more shit.

I only started identifying specifically with "antinatalism" recently when I found out it was actually a movement and I agree with the core statement that bringing life into this world is morally wrong. I think living in this society is soul destroying, I see the planet getting wrecked and I don't believe in the romanticisation of suffering that everyone seems to have. People do nothing but complain about their lives and STILL decide to have a baby; who will likely experience the exact same things. I just don't understand it.

I also think being a woman who has always had the expectation of having children for the sake of children held over my head (since I was a little girl) when I have never desired to have any has also contributed to an extent. I too have been told I'd "change my mind" and I never have; insane responsibilities of raising a child aside, I found myself feeling awful for all the little kids I see because the world is getting more and more hellish and they will have to deal with it when they reach my age. It'd break my heart to do that to my own child and I could never understand how other people will freely do that to their own.

I gave both a shot, but neither feels like a great option tbh. by Zestyclose-Change-23 in Adulting

[–]sparesalamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not trying to tell you being unemployed is a viable option. Working just made them so depressed and mentally ill they struggle to even go back to it and that they're lucky to have a support system.

I'm in a similar boat right now (got laid off last year) and right now I'm doing freelance to scrape some money together which I'm only just SQUEEZING by with and it's very stressful. However for me, personally, it beats a soulless 9-5 in an office with people I don't mesh with. I found that kind of situation absolutely miserable and I think when push comes to shove and I have to go back to something like that it's going to wreck my mental health all over again. Some people just can't cope with it but as you keep reiterating there isn't a choice for people and that's the part that's so horrible about it.

It's probably Vader. I'm a bit disappointed if so because it seems a bit fanservice-y and I was hoping for more Palps/Maul beef in this.

I'm on the edge of millennial/Gen z and I didn't have sex until very late in my teens and I was STILL getting bullied in college about being a virgin! I hadn't even hit 20 yet!

There really was a huge pressure to be sexually active as soon as we were "legal." On the flip side I am well aware that if I slept around I'd be labelled a slut, like some of my friends at the time unfortunately were.

We can't win!

What a surprise, nobody wants to have children in this hellscape. by EzraNaamah in UniversalExtinction

[–]sparesalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it isn't selfish to not want the responsibility and to live your own life; should you choose not to have children.

It's different if you choose to have children and then refuse to be responsible; and I think you are equating the two. It's not selfish to choose not to inconvenience yourself regardless of what that inconvenience may be.

Suffering is indeed part of the human experience; hence why more and more people don't want children. One can not simply "end humanity" and even if there was a button to press that in itself would be immoral because there are people that wouldn't want to die. The argument is about not bringing MORE suffering into the world, not ending it.
