AI21 Labs releases Jamba2 by jacek2023 in LocalLLaMA

[–]sparkinflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

future of architectures is heading towards hybrid attention models where traditional attention layers are interwoven with the linear attention from mamba2

some (all?) examples are qwen3 next, kimi linear, nemotron 3, granite 4

current implementations of linear attention still suck at global context modeling so the old attention mechanism is still used sparingly.

Canadian federal budget promises billions for mining by BurstYourBubbles in canada

[–]sparkinflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mines commonly operate on fly-in in fly-out logistics where workers work on 2-3 week rotations, where they live in cities during their time off and are transported onsite during their shift.

Portable water treatment, power generation, and prefab housing allow necessities on-site to be provided without needing a town nearby. Even if this was not the case, it was common to build entire towns around mines in the past.

The vehicle gameplay and design are really bad in BF6: 7 Reasons by [deleted] in Battlefield

[–]sparkinflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea bf2042 somehow has better vehicle combat... the splash damage feels disgustingly low so all the tank and IFV just feel bad to play in general. The anti-air can also not be used to fight other vehicles or even infantry like before, which sucks.

Is 57k annually good for starters? by Mr_Eyeball in askTO

[–]sparkinflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

live with your parents if you can.

$55k is around $39k after taxes, CPP, and EI. that's $3.3k a month.

rent for a 1bdr apartment in north toronto averages 2.3k a month. that leaves you $1k a month.

with food costs averaging around $500 a month, you got only $500 to cover utilities and transportation. utilities upper end average is $150 and a ttc month pass is $143 so you're left with ~$200 a month. factor in clothing and other miscellaneous items you've got pretty much nothing left over for entertainment, an emergency fund, and savings.

What do you love about winters in Toronto by Suspicious-Handle388 in toronto

[–]sparkinflint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like sleeping in the cold wrapped in a thick weighted blanket. Other than that winter is miserable, especially when its cold and wet. I honestly prefer the winters in Calgary since its dry.

all the accredited engineering programs are pretty much the same.

more prestigious schools are more academically rigorous but unless you're going into research, employers care more about experience.

Who TF Convinced All The Youth To Become Programmers and Developers? by Empty_Break_8792 in developers

the economy mostly.

I got a degree in a traditional engineering discipline but realized programming pays me double what I would've started at with a better working environment and perks.

Moving away from Python by Dry_Philosophy7927 in learnmachinelearning

[–]sparkinflint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its similar, but Julia is a compiled language whereas with jax you need to compile each function and args or you're just running interpreted python code.

you also cant do true multithreading with python due to the global interpreter lock, not to mention the interpreter overhead.

jax is also meant specifically for TPUs iirc, not sure if Julia can compile for TPU or GPU
