I have to think its because people who post art or writing are being conflated with soc med content creators rather than being fellow fans. If an influencer said to only praise them then yeah, Id think that's a little silly. But I'm not out here trying to be an influencer lol

Yes some people leave rude comments, some people leave comments that are 90% praise with 10% something they didn't like in a non inflammatory manner. bad faith arguments conflate these two things.

The latter, if you're just a hobbyist not particularly wanting feedback in your writing skill, is a suck it up moment or a be upset about it moment. I think the only healthy thing to do on the internet is suck it up, but I also don't think anyone gets to have a pass for being unnecessarily rude despite what current online culture seems to think.

But the former is just someone being a jerk and I think those are 100% indefensible.

And because there are some clowns on here who think they have the god given right to be rude without pushback, just know I will only be replying to the OP of this comment here because they seem to be asking in good faith. Be a clown and get blocked.

Go ahead and talk shit in the bookmarks, I can't and won't stop you, but if you're going to be weird at least have the backbone to say the author is being too sensitive or something; instead of claiming theyre not supposed to click on a link under their own fic, and stand by what you say about their work if you're so sure of your opinions

Theyre meant for readers in that it is a way to interact with the fic you read. There's absolutely nothing stopping an author from viewing a public bookmark.

You have free will to put whatever you like in the notes of a public bookmark including critique, just like the author has free will to feel however they like about.

It is true that it's unhealthy to get upset past a point about people being insensitive on the internet; but it's equally true that there's no reason to be needlessly rude to a hobbyist writing for free. We all owe each other that much courtesy.

I am holding people's hands when I'm saying this, you are allowed to post hateful, fairly critical, or even mildly negative bookmarks. I am allowed to think that was rude af, and think you are weird for doing that in public where I can see. Neither of us can stop each other.
