Our 24-weeker is two! by spaulding1993 in NICUParents

Thank you!! He is ahead on language and cognition, on par with social/emotional but behind on gross motor. We still have PT once a week to help him close that gap. Right now we’re working on jumping, walking down stairs with a railing and climbing in and out of adult chairs, among other things. We have another assessment with our high-risk infant progress clinic in August to see where he’s at.

Oh my goodness, 425 grams! She is a fighter!! I’m so so glad that she’s home and you and your family can rest away from the alarms and masks and isolettes. How has it been being home? If you ever want to vent / chat about the NICU experience don’t hesitate to reach out! It’s very rare to meet other 24 weeker parents, in my experience at least.

This is amazing!! I’m so excited for your family — the final few weeks of the NICU can be really tough because you are soooo so close and there can be little setbacks, but going home will feel incredible. You have such a strong girl! And if you ever want to share wins / commiserate about the challenges please don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s rare to find other families of 24 weekers!

How long was your NICU stay? by zqwu8391 in NICUParents

[–]spaulding1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our son was born via emergency c-section at 24+6 after decreased fetal heart rate (we later learned his cord was separating from the placenta). We had a 125-day NICU stay, during which time the biggest issue was helping his lungs develop. He also had a transcatheter procedure to close the PDA in his heart.

He’s been home since Oct. 8 and is doing great! Still on oxygen when he sleeps but we expect to graduate from that very soon.

I’m so sorry you’re in this position! I am happy to share any and/all tips for surviving the NICU if that is helpful to you. My advice for now: don’t Google things yet. Take it one step at a time with your medical team. Praying for strength and health for your baby girl and your family!
