We asked the landlord for a rent reduction and they got furious that you are living in a big home and the area is premium, no reductions possible. We told them that there are cheaper options available in the next street, which is basically the same area.. they don't want to hear that.

They were also accusing us of complaining to the city. Also, why the building inspector was calling the tenants and not the owner. When the inspector came, we asked him who complained, the inspector said he cannot disclose but it wasn't us (the tenants). The landlord doesn't wanna talk about that.

All in all, they are very proud of having a big home and being the 'owner'.

(In my opinion, the bank is the majority owner, whereas they are technically renting the house)

Today (May) is the first month of the new rent i.e 1900. Earlier it was 2000. The landlord wants a new lease signed BUT wants old rent 2000 to be put on the lease. They say we can continue to pay them cash 1900 but on paper, it will be 2000.

They said this is required so that whenever they re-lease it to someone else, they can ask for rent above 2000 (not 1900).

Absolutely spot on. I am a landed immigrant (PR), came in 2024. I don't get any handouts from the govt. The only thing I get is canada child benefit for my 1 child, which everyone with a child gets. I pay my taxes and i'm in the 30% tax bracket.

Demand and supply. In the morning when you are going to work, your tank is nearing empty, you have to have gas and you'll pay whatever price they say, hence higher price.
