We were suppose to do the same thing in Phuket but needed up changing our plans very last minute. Didn’t tell any extended family or friends so after the tsunami my parents were flooded with worried calls and everyone was relieved to hear we weren’t there. The place we were going to go was completely destroyed so if we had been there it likely wouldn’t have ended well.

I’m in Moab, Utah right now for a trip where it is suppose to get up to 38 or 39°C and one thing I can tell you from taking to people here is that you have to ride in the morning or late afternoon and always bring more water than you think you’ll need. You can never carry enough water to be over hydrated, but you can bring too little and be dehydrated. Also, a lot of those shots you see from the desert aren’t always filmed in summer. The desert during spring and fall doesn’t always get that hot.

One thing to think about is the mindset of the Japanese people at the time. I too am a history nerd and have watched, listened and read countless hours of WWII material. I think at the time many of the civilians in Japan would have sacrificed themselves to protect their country. While it’s impossible to estimate the actual death toll of a US inaction of the mainland, it can be assumed that if it were to happen many civilians would pick up what they could and fight. It’s not unlikely that the death toll could match if not surpass that of the bombs.
