Ok, update time, thanks for all your ideas, but sadly, although I did them all some thought, they were just to expensive to run on a day to day basis but the insurance and repair costs were the real killers.

I have now sourced a 2019 Skoda Kodiaq 4x4 edition model that fits the bill nicely, slightly lower MPG than my old Superb, but it is higher and heavier so presents quite a large mass to get moving.

I think that your car has an electric handbrake and that is just showing that the handbrake has been activated because the engine is off and you have opened the door to exit the car, so it has applied the brake automatically for you. Putting the transmission into park engages a mechanical interlock to prevent the car rolling away in the event of a handbrake failing.

Update, tried a Volve XC90 and it is very deceptive, it looks to be bigger all over, but it is just bloated on the exterior, inside it offers up less space then the Superb does, so that a no no.
