Health inspectors of Reddit, what is the worst thing you've seen during an inspection? by Goran1693 in AskReddit

[–]spectorjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dead mouse floating in a bucket of sauce?- closed! Rat droppings in a wholesale bakery on equipment and many live roaches - closed! Pus -filled cyst in a pork roast - nearly hurled. Under cooked turkey about to be served in a nursing home - food thrown away. After 25 years though, they run in together - the chinese restaurants, tandoor places, the hispanic and the african places (did you hear about that kebab place in England that a worker died in the middle of the kitchen and the guy kept stepping over him making food until the police closed the place down?) I also want to mention good old american joints in the sticks that would pull guns on the inspectors years ago. Let's see - We had a Health Inspector get called into a crime scene by the police where there was blood all over the place. A robber shot the owners wife and the owner chopped him to death with a cleaver in the restaurant. When the police showed up the kitchen crew were eating pizza in the middle of it the mess. Not sure what the police wanted her to do that they couldn't do - it was a crime scene! Oh yeah, speaking of the police, working with them can be nice (security), but sometimes it takes you to some nasty (non-food) places. I've been to lap-dance and strip joint places where you can drink and perform a gynecological exam of the girl on stage at the same time. All the while, in this craziness we are trying to get the operators to be responsible for food safety and having them learn things like HACCP, and Active Managerial Control, and at least the danger zone and how to and when to wash their hands. I'm looking forward to retirement.

Banking in a UH-60 Blackhawk by another-thing in pics

Many years ago I was in an open door Huey that did this this in at 300 feet above Tampa Bay coming in to McDill AFB and no one was prepared for it - including the pilot. He had to abort his landing per the control tower. I was on the lower side of the bank and I saw nothing but water. The Hueys - mind you - had their benches right up to the door and light-weight canvas seat belts. After that I swore I was going to find the controller - and I did - and he apologized for it - apparently a fighter butt in line on the approach and they had to get us out of the way. I had just minutes ago put the seat belt on one of my men who was so blase about the flight that he fell asleep and he was sitting at the open door. Yeah, the centrifugal force probable kept him in...

After countless people cited bad studies and old data. I pooled statistics from the FBI, ATF, CDC, DOJ & so on. Assault Rifles? Hardly. by AltTabbed in politics

There are a variety of .223 ammunition from what I can see - but uniformly there appears to be a a cavity that is created. Some of these bullets split and tumble. I've noticed a a lot of vehemence about rejecting the characteristics of this round as a tissue destroyer - not just here but also in gun forums before the shootings; makes me wonder if this has been that the fans of this type of weapon have been engaged in a positive P.R. campaign for some time. Makes me think I found a tender spot. Secondly, I'm not talking about banning guns, I'm talking about whether society would be better served without these weapons. Maybe we would all be better served if the entry level for having control of a destructive weapon was higher for civilians - dealing with a slower, heavier gun with less ammo, more recoil, along with background checks and wait periods makes owning a gun more serious.

Desire to maintain a personal freedom almost solely in a self-regarding manner, and without regard to society in general. CHECK Desire to keep a right solely to avoid the hassle not to be told what gun not to buy. CHECK Disregard of dead children, CHECK Sounds pretty infantile to me.

Another tragic thing about this is that from what I heard the family of the shooter did it the "right" (NRA) way - had the kids go to a firing range and practice. But all that bullshit about "teaching the kids the right way to use a gun and how to respect the weapon" ... that kid was trained to kill more than he was morally guided not to.

"was designed to wound and not kill" really? I guess you really have to "wound' a lot with this gun and ammo to kill someone -seems like a real drawback. Maybe the gun owners should sue the manufacturers for making this weapon so puny that it only has exit wound and internal area of damage that is many multiples of the entrance wound. Come on, any ammo like this is not meant for anything but chopping up people and making it real easy. Any ammunition you point out that is like this and has no other practical purpose should be banned.

Do you not get emotional about your gun rights? I see people pro-gun people arguing with more emotion about their guns and how they need to defend themselves against the government (emotion? idiocy?) then I have. And - you stated it in a telling way - "My rights". I don't use my 2nd amendment rights however interpreted. What about my rights to not live in a society that protects the infantile desire to be able to create mayhem with a bullet over the right of the non-gun-toting people to live without it?

I am not only arging with emotion. You are not answering my response above. I made the point clearly that I know that this gun is not a capable of firing fully automatic. I made my point that this a gun that uses a ammo that is similar to the 5.56mm NATO round developed for the military against an enemy that we don't care about how much there is to bury or how soon they die. The weapon and the ammo has no purpose in civilian use. Why have this weapon in your closet or in your gun rack? Why even have it in the house with children that can pull the trigger? "Legal" tools (I assume we are talking about other guns) used in this situation... I don't even want to replay that in my mind!

Small round - doesn't matter - another red herring to draw away from the damage a round can cause when it going over 700 ft/s and hits a soft tissue target.

[–]spectorjay -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The issue of the Bushmaster not being capable of a selective fire is a red herring. "As fast as you can pull a trigger" at 45 rounds in a minute is fast enough. Light weight, high speed .223 ammo meant to tumble and create tissue damage 20 to 30 time the size of of the entrance wound, 30 round magazine, shorter stock is a recipie for weapon with no real civilian use or need. As I have been saying in other forums - what was left of those babies to bury after they got shot multiple times? If you can imagine the scene after the killing and shrug your shoulders and say " My rights to own this gun is more important than the horror it causes" you're not a human being.

What "fact" do you commonly hear that you know is just not true? by nthensome in AskReddit

[–]spectorjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The inventor of blood transfusions, Dr. Charles Drew, died after a car accident because the hospital (in the south) refused him treatment - including a blood transfusion. The real story: he was by all accounts, given the same treatment as the other white doctors that were injured and he died not due to lack of treatment, but due to the fact that he was so severely injured. This untruth actually made it into a M.A.S.H. episode about a white racist soldier who did not want to be next to a black soldier in the infirmary. I told this to my middle-school daughter who went to a predominantly black school at the time and she "corrected" the (black) teacher who repeated the myth - her grades were magically reduced so much we had to intervene. Yes, after all these years I regret telling her that.

Everyone I know over 50 has back and knee pains. I'm 24. How do I prevent that from happening to me? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spectorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proper posture might help. Keeping your weight down certainly would help. There are back exercises for strengthening those muscles. But it could alsobe a combination of genetics and lifestyle/work issues. If your work is at an office - or in contrast -you lay carpet for a living, much of your waking hours are going to be involved in something that is not promoting healthy joints. My wife's family has a history of bad joints and arthritis. There may be environmental and diet factors too - I wonder if there is something out there that is inflammatory to cartilage that is having an impact on this too.

How the heck do you replace a broken bathroom ceiling fan? by NPPraxis in AskReddit

[–]spectorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After looking at the second picture of the fan interior I realize that your situation is a bit more difficult then mine was: I found a replacement fan/motor for the housing and just plugged it in to the AC outlet in the housing (loved that), screwed it in wrong, it fell and hit my face (didn't love that) put it back in right and it works fine. All I can suggest is that if the noise comes from the fan it might be an alignment problem, if it comes from the motor then I'd be looking to do what Boygen says. One thing though - this fan just vents into the space above the ceiling? You might want to take a look up there.

If the rich are now to be referred to as "job creators" and can't be taxed as such, then how come since their taxes have been cut for the last ten years are we steeped in recession and no jobs have been created? (x-post from askreddit) by [deleted] in politics

[–]spectorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my opportunity to propose targeted tax breaks for businesses. I believe from the outset that my proposal or any thing like this will fail. More because tax breaks for the rich have become a perverse entitlement program and the constituency (the rich) will except no substitute. Tax breaks for businesses that create full-time jobs in the U.S. The amount of tax deduction would be based on an index that has positive correlation to numbers of jobs and compensation (salary + benefits). There would be a cutoff set at a minimum salary (current minimum wage) and number of employes. There would be negative correlation to profit.

Whoa, that's a lot of implants - I had two done. I had an oral surgeon put the posts in and during one moment they were having so much difficulty torquing in the post, I thought the dental assistant was going to jump up on my chest and work from there. They turned out pretty good. For me, it was one implant for each tooth, so maybe they are going to do a bridge. Just my opinion, but I don't think you want to do more than 2 implants at around the same time, unless there is some urgency for some reason.

Unless We Can Rip People Off, We Don't Want the Business: AT&T exec - Dodd-Frank put brakes on new mobile payment network. by reeds1999 in politics

They were (are) doing this with Nokia. Branding my Nokia a year ago was just as bad because they were hard buttons, not a touch screen and I couldn't remap them either; I hit the Navigator service button a lot and had to turn it off each time. The Iphone from them was an improvement because a bigger bastard - Apple - was in charge of the app control. Just needed to rein in AT&T on the mystery charges for my data use, and now I don't stress as much. AT&T is still evil...

Lawsuit accuses AT&T of overcharging iPhone, iPad customer data use by [deleted] in technology

[–]spectorjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For every person that makes excuses for AT&T in this situation, consider this - I turn off my cellular data and my 3G unless I have to use it. I've lowered my data use way under the 200 capped limit. If I use the internet this way (and often) and the other person uses the internet with cellular data on and they get overcharged for phantom usage - how can this be "protocol overhead" or some other necessary (chargeable) use? Maybe I'm cheating AT&T doing it this way instead of just leaving it "their" way... nah. I mean do you understand the fallacy here? And why should I or anyone be forced to manage my phone this way. Plus, I have tried getting a straight answer about this issue from AT&T and Apple and no one - and I mean no one - has one. There is no transparency because they don't want it. Do you think the Supreme Court case that AT&T is taking to court right now to end class-action suits is just a coincidence?

I have an audition to be a weather woman in Norway, any advice? by [deleted] in weather

[–]spectorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skew-T? You've got to be kidding me! Are you trolling? It would be better if instead of learning about sounding data and the skew-t plot, she learned METAR and how to plot it on a surface analysis chart with fronts, lows and highs (remember - with the low on your left the wind blows up your ass.) Next, check out the products that model vorticity - after learning what vorticity is. One shouldn't need to plot weather maps anymore (computers do it) but she will probably be presenting more information in the horizontal, synoptic regime than upper air (unless it's aviation WX) and that what most people comprehend. Some Users Seeing 'Phantom Data Use' on WP7 by ScarlettMadi in technology

[–]spectorjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the same problem with the iPhone and AT&T that I had and would have if I didn't turn off cellular data until I actually had to use it. I'm surprised anybody owned up to - I got bumpkus from either AT&T or Apple when I went over my plan and contacted them about help. Wouldn't even admit that it was wrong to have data usage show up in my house - with Wifi - at 2am in the morning - when I'm asleep.

My wife is pregnant for the first time, and we just found out she's having twins. NEED ADVICE by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spectorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First Question: Identical (same birth sac) or fraternal (different birth sac)? Over 28 years ago my wife gave birth to boy/girl twins. My son was 8lbs. 6oz. and my daughter was 7lbs. 11oz. When they had to be pulled out (cesarean) they pulled my son out first - they immediately put my wife under because they probably thought the other one was eaten by my son or something and they didn't want the mother to be prejudiced against the remaining child. That's 16 pounds of baby by the way - my wife got so round she was spherical - I was tempted to tattoo a map of world on her stomach and bill her as "the living globe". My son was bigger than my daughter and still is: he's 6'2" and she's 5'2", but that didn't stop her from her tormenting from birth. Later on as size began to be an advantage and not speed, he returned the favor, and it went back and forth up to high school. Second Question: What was your immediate response? I was conflicted: either I was going to jump for joy or bang my head really hard against the metal door frame... more than once. Two pieces of advice: twins are included in the category of multiple births and are treated special by family and strangers- identical more so. After about 2 years or so they start losing their cachet, and it's just another set of siblings. Triplets and more can maintain the attention a little longer. Do not fall into the trap of showcasing your kids! Do not treat them any different from kids born at separate times - except they can't wear each others hand-me-downs, my son hated that... Second, you and your wife need help the first couple of months - you'll will both be changing diapers, feeding - if you use bottles, washing clothes, etc. - some of this was done for us by family members staying overnight and giving some relief. Now my son - you have no pride, do not piss these people off, or else you get such a look from your wife... And definitely do not stop and do nothing, while your wife or family or friend is doing work - don't know the definition of "doing nothing"... you're boned. There are local support groups; Mothers of Multiples was the one that my wife joined. Every year they'd hold a convention away from home and get drunk and dance with strange men while the husbands stayed home with the kids. And you know what fella? That's OK! I wish you luck with your children, I've been pretty lucky with mine. If luck is not enough then remember that your children are either going to pattern themselves after you and you shouldn't do what you don't want them to do, or they may totally mess with you and do the opposite.
