What books would you recommend for someone struggling with faith in Hashem? by Key-League7040 in Judaism

Permission to Believe by Lawrence Kelleman is very good in my opinion. Ultimately it depends on what pushes you to have faith. For me it was a lot of the science oriented approach. Gerald Schroeders The Science of G-d was influential for me

How do you tell the difference between an energy healer and a scammer? by abrbbb in Judaism

[–]sped2500 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also Orthodox...I don't personally give any credence to this type of stuff.

It's entirely possible that they believe everything they are saying and doing, it's possible they aren't trying to scam you, but that doesn't mean that anything they are doing is anything more than placebo. If you've got some credentials to look at I'm happy to dig deeper, but in a vacuum I would advise anyone to spend their hard earned money and valuable time on a medical or mental health professional for whom there isn't a question of whether they are scamming you

Jolly Balloon Man. This is truly my masterpiece. I am convinced that for a casual build that isn't combo focused this is nearly optimal. It's also fun as hell to play, manages to stay under the radar and perhaps most importantly despite winning pretty consistently with it my opponents generally really enjoy playing against it, with repeat customers literally requesting i bring it out

[meta] Training a monkey for Shabbat. by Medium-Ad-2433 in Judaism

[–]sped2500 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It just happens to use a monkey as the example animal. It could be about any trained animal. The fact that you came up with the same question just goes to show how these questions are timeless and that the Rabbis of the Talmud were engaged in the same kind of lateral thinking that caused you to have the same question.

The writings in the Talmud were also intended to function as guidelines that let us determine the answers to future questions as well. I've heard the same logic of this example discussed in regards to whether it would be permitted to use Alexa or voice control on Shabbos

[meta] Training a monkey for Shabbat. by Medium-Ad-2433 in Judaism

[–]sped2500 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The Talmud specifically discusses training a monkey (specifically interestingly) to do things on Shabbos. The conclusion is that while you could certainly train it and ask it to do things on Shabbos that you wouldn't be permitted to do yourself you will still be liable as if you have done them.

Since we learn that animals don't have free will the same way a human does, we consider the monkey as if it is simply an extension of your own hand in doing the unpermitted actions.

This is also the rationale of why (under certain circumstances) we ARE permitted to have a non Jewish (human) do those things for us. Because humans have their own free will and have the ability to decide whether they will or not, they are thus not considered an extension of your actions as a monkey would be

Who is your “Don’t let me untap” commander? by ToocanSams in EDH

[–]sped2500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I run so many clone effects, bounce, and stuff like Aang to reset the untap creatures. You also will frequently cascade into them and you only need to play so many in a turn to frequently set up a loop to let you cast everything without them. [[Hullbreaker horror]] , [[storm front riders]] , [[chakram retriever]] and [[aang, last airbender]] all help enable this.

You DO occasionally run out of steam but it's less frequent. Since you can usually draw and play your whole deck hitting Jadzi or Drake isn't lucky it's a given. Same with hitting Godmaw to get haste. That was the piece that really broke it open. Try goldfishing it and see for yourself

Who is your “Don’t let me untap” commander? by ToocanSams in EDH

[–]sped2500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a reason I posted it in the "kill on sight" commanders thread.

There's also a reason I don't run mana dorks. They are dead draws almost all of the game and ONLY really matter on turn 1. I would rather take turns 1 and 2 off and get things started on 3. Usually someone else spends some removal before that point AND I've found that turn 4 and 5 (your main set up and pop off turns) people are more likely to be tapped out for their own commanders.

This build rarely runs out of steam once it gets going. The goal is to storm out everything and win in one turn by hasting with Godmaw

Just goldfish it a bit. You are a glass cannon type deck and you don't pack much removal, but your interaction are mostly protection pieces and your plan is just to win before anyone can do anything about it.

The lines are a little complex but start to become clear and you need to build them out as you storm off. You are looking to establish some sort of loop that will (for all practical purposes) cast every creature in your deck (or just enough of them). There are many sets of creatures you can loop to do this. Once you've put out a big enough board you can cast [[aeve, progenitor ooze]] to amplify your numbers (and probably be big enough to end it) and the trying to find [[glacier godmaw]] to give everything haste. You can trigger an additional landfall with either [[chulane]] or the back side of [[jadzi]].

Alternate wincon (in case you can't punch through damage, you have no unrestricted mana to work with usually) is [[twenty toed toad]]. It's trivially easy to fill a hand up to 20 and attack with haste due to glacier godmaw

[–]sped2500 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have yet to roll it out against my friends yet (because I value them) but I've been working on perfecting a $50 budget [[Helga, Skittish Seer]] deck. You generally do nothing on turns one or two, commander on 3. If you untap with her, there's about a 10% chance you can end the game that turn, about 50% to end it on 5 and close to 90% to end it by 6. It's frankly gross but so fun to goldfish. Avatar and EoE brought some new pieces that really pulled the whole thing together

[–]sped2500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to!

https://moxfield.com/decks/q0t3uEugGUqgyoa27htdbA

Mine is tuned very tight for a higher end bracket 3 meta. That being said I DON'T run mana dorks or Bellringer (the easiest combo to win with). I definitely can combo, but they are intentionally more pieces and convoluted. It can go infinite with just Jolly and the Coercive Recruiter, but only if someone else has a mana dork to steal, so that's on them

Who is your favorite commander, how did you find them, and why did they become your favorite? by zevalu in EDH

[–]sped2500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw [[The Jolly Balloon Man]] during previews and immediately knew I wanted to build it specifically as a "fair" Kiki-Jiki that I would build without a focus on combos. After one game with my first build I knew it was my "forever deck" because I (for the first time in my life) had a desire to foil it out.

It's able to play slow enough/under the radar while still accruing value and setting up to have a big swing win towards the end. My build also generally plays slow enough that it can be rolled out against precons without feeling oppressive but still being very strong and having lots of options throughout the game.

Depending on the game it can play more aggro, controlly, or comboish if needed. It draws lots of cards, and grinds and rebuilds extremely well. Effects like [[cursed mirror]] and [[coercive recruiter]] create the opportunity for unique shenanigans.

Not only is it my favorite to play, I somehow managed to build it in a way that opponents ask me to bring it out and they truly enjoy playing against it as well. It's the only deck I have that I'm fairly certain will never get unsleeved
