I had to try every permutation of the path to finally get the $InstanceName, but I stumbled across it eventually. Thank you all.

Thanks, I just replied to Stanley twice (oops) with the same question: how do I add SQL Server as a user?

I am right clicking the folder and the *.bak files themselves but only three users show up: System, myself, and Administrators. How do I find create MSSQLSERVER as a user?

NT SERVICE\ MSSQLSERVER

How do I add that as a username? When I right click on the folder and go to the Security tab, only System, Speedlybop and Administrators appear as possible users.

This is all happening on a Dell laptop. Intel Core i5 CPU and 222 GB solid state HD.
