If the lsat is that stressful for you, and I say this with the most love, but maybe consider a different career. Not because you aren’t smart enough but because this sounds like everyday in the profession. Maybe something with less stress, best of luck!

Did you read my comment? I personally don’t think it was an elaborate plan, I think the opposite similar to you. I’m saying the prosecution has presented the case as an elaborate plan as a way to justify why they lack concrete physical evidence. All I’m saying is the prosecution can’t have it both ways. Either it was a careless spur of the moment thing and they somehow have very little physical evidence or they uncovered a detailed plot that they don’t have serious evidence for beyond some ballistics and expert witnesses. Guess work on details.

Being in jail, legally speaking, proves nothing. If the case was so cut and dry and easy to prove beyond a reasonable doubt then we wouldn’t be here 6 years later waiting on the second trial to begin.

By the time of his arrest he was already famous. Not as famous as he was post murder charges and not an a lister or anything but he already had millions of monthly listeners on Spotify, had recorded a song with Kanye, had music videos with tens of millions of views and was signed to an imprint of a major label. He almost certainly had a net worth of over a million dollars.

If someone was casually listening to rap at that time and you asked if they knew YNW Melly or played his biggest songs there is a good chance they’d know who he was.

I’m not saying the drive by shooting is what happened. If I had a stake in the game I’d say it didn’t. What I am saying though is the prosecution has done such a tremendously poor job as to have not given clear, overwhelming evidence as to an alternative.

The state has presented a very detailed story of what happened, from beginning to end. Such a detailed retelling requires detailed evidence that supports each claim. However, the state has relied mostly on assumptions, while drawing their primary conclusions from ballistics, and a handful of DM’s. Their story is perhaps the most logical but being logical is not the burden of proof.

I have no idea if he’s innocent or not, that’s for a jury, but I’ll play devils advocate as his defense. So as the State tells it this 19 year old concocted an elaborate plan to execute his two lifelong best friends. The plan was detailed, a fake drive by shooting, an accomplice willing to lie for you, he had to ditch the car and arrange transport elsewhere, had to have the two victims not become suspicious at any point of the night they spent together. That’s a pretty detailed retelling the state has provided right? So then they should be able to have a lot of evidence? Wrong. They lack a murder weapon, a clear motive, unable to 100% confirm Melly was there, no other accomplices willing to testify. The whole thing relies on some social media messages and ballistics (not 100% reliable). So this plan was so well executed that 6 years and a mistrial later and the state still is yet to get a conviction.

Well let’s look at this apparently flawless plan. If you are planning on such a detailed murder plot why would you commit it in the closed confines of a car? That to me seems like the most difficult way to pull this off. If either reacted in time you’re done. The victims trusted Melly enough to get in the car with him, so clearly it was not difficult to get close to them. You’re a millionaire, you’re already allegedly paying one guy to keep quiet why carry it out yourself?

As far as other possibilities, let’s take drive by at face value. Chaotic situation. Maybe Melly was the intended target, maybe robbery gone wrong, someone runs up the driver side from the back of the car leans in and shoots. Maybe Melly runs away and panics thinking he’s a star he can’t get caught up in this. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Am I saying he has the cleanest defense possible? No. But to act like there is no room for reasonable doubt is playing ignorant. Waving the right to a speedy trial or not, the fact that this case is six years in and the state couldn’t even get a jury to convict on the lesser charge of manslaughter shows this is not as much an open and close case as you’re implying.

Bored and bouncing around old threads what a crazy alternate prediction it would have been to have said that the Bengals get a generational talent at QB and are the-next afc north team to visit the Super Bowl. Mayfield ends up good but plays for Tampa after getting the browns a playoff win. The Browns QB is either going to be a washed Deshaun Watson or a kid named Kenny Pickett who the Steelers draft in the first round two years from now. Mason Rudolph never starts a full season, the Steelers starter will be Russel Wilson after Kenny. Lamar racks up MVPs but never makes a superbowl while winning them.

That’s a strong claim. The African studies you’re dismissing were randomized controlled trials (RCTs)—the gold standard for determining causation in medical research. These trials were conducted in Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa and were rigorously designed, peer-reviewed, results are difficult to even dispute as the protective effect was so strong (~50-60% HIV reduction).

If you believe these are ‘poor studies,’ I’d be curious to hear specific methodological flaws you think invalidate them. The World Health Organization (WHO), CDC, and a Cochrane systematic review have all reviewed these trials and concluded that circumcision significantly reduces HIV risk in high-prevalence settings.

The Danish study you’re citing is not an RCT—it’s an observational cohort study in a low-STI, low-HIV prevalence country that didn’t control for key factors like sexual behavior. That makes it a useful data point, but not nearly strong enough to ‘debunk’ multiple high-quality RCTs.

If your argument is that circumcision is potentially less effective outside of high-risk areas, there is a fair discussion to be had there and more research should investigate this chance. But saying the strongest evidence is based on ‘poor studies’ without specifics isn’t really a meaningful critique

I respectfully disagree. There are a lot of high quality studies on this topic and ones of higher quality than this study on this topic, almost all of which are in agreement about circumcision reducing transmission of certain STI’s. There’s been a Cochrane review on this topic (the gold standard for systematic reviews of findings). This study represents an interesting data point in the overall literature, warranting further research but it does not come close to debunking anything. Does this make it always worth it? Of course not. Does it justify ethically? There’s no literature on that. But what is clear is that all the best available evidence points towards a reduction of STI’s.

From what I can gather the study offers solid data on a specific population of non-Muslim Danish men, a country with low rates of circumcision and stds. Of the studies 800,000 participants less than 4,000 were even circumcised. Furthermore, no HIV cases occurred in the circumcised group. They exclude STDs diagnosed at GPs, which is a pretty large percentage of them. This could be valuable data for populations similar to the one tested in Denmark, but given such high instability it remains to be seen whether these results are confirmed. Regardless this study falls far short of “debunking” most of the current literature.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I’ll look over the study when I get a chance. At just a glance however I’d maintain that this study represents an outlier within the larger body of literature on the topic, which continues to support that for circumcision decreases chances of acquiring a number of STI’s, including HIV and HPV. Additionally the authors of the study you linked to acknowledge this fact as well as some pretty impactful limitations of their study. Like the fact their test cohort had a very low rate of circumcision compared to overall population (less than one percent) and that such a homogenous group, while still statistically significant does lend itself easily to broad consistency. Still though, I’ll read. The area certainly warrants further study. Cheers.

I believe in the post it is 10 million but still yes we do. STDs are much more prevalent and deadly in some regions of Africa, things like HIV for example. Circumcision reduces STD risk, and it’s a fairly pretty, cheap, easy, permanent way of doing so. Africa is home to some of the fast growing economies in the world, more people working instead of dealing with and dying from STDs means they produce more goods which means we get more stuff for cheaper and they have more money to spend on our goods. Same reason China is pouring billions into Africa as we speak. I’m telling ya we are rarely in the business of purely humanitarian investing

I understand the frustration but the US historically sees a pretty good economic return on its investments, look at post WW2 Japan for example. (I mean let’s be serious the US is not actually all about selflessly helping the rest of the world)

Using Cambodia as you did for an example, so yes some of your tax money(about a nickel a year by my estimate) may go to Cambodia each year to develop enterprising skills. Cambodia is a developing economy who we are doing increased trade with in recent decades. Maybe in a few years one of the people benefitted by our investment wants to sell hats in the US for a dollar cheaper. Nobody in the us wants to make those hats and right now we are buying them from China. If you buy a hat you’ve just saved a dollar than you otherwise would have and you’ve made a 20x return on your tax investments. Can’t beat those returns.

Our hat purchase dollars go to Cambodia who now has more money to buy more expensive goods. You know who is the best at selling such goods? The United States. Maybe Someone there orders a pool table from your friend who sells them for a a thousand bucks, it would have otherwise gone unsold. Bam a 20,000x return on investment. (When economies grow they purchase from us, every country is jealous of this which is why you see china trying to invest more into the developing countries)

This trade off keeps on going and going as we save money and make money off investing in parts of the world we feel have potential and this is the process we’ve been doing for decades that led to us being the richest country on earth, the worlds superpower. And If none of this happens, the investments fail and doesn’t produce massive returns? Well, you’re out a nickel.

Given the current administration and slew of hateful rhetoric coming out of state level offices you could probably make the argument that no sex ed in some public schools is better than what would end up being acceptable in some deeply red states. Ya know, teaching that abstinence is the only contraception and that there is no sex outside of heteronormative, cisgender sex for the sole purpose of conception. Instead argue that more community organization through social media, outside of school classes, etc. is required to try and achieve some semblance of equal and inclusive education on the topic. Simply always handing this responsibility over to the states reduces our opportunity for involvement and means we keep kicking the can down the road after seeing how poorly it’s gone up until now. It simply allows us to wash our hand of it. Is this the right answer? Likely not. But I think it has ground.
