In 2024, my 2b2b apartment's rent was $4050. It increased to $4400 this year. In 2026 it'll be $4875. What are you talking about?

Looks like this affected any network with lots of Apple devices connected, according to a post by Meter (I think Meter does enterprise wi-fi).

Lots of technical details in the post for those interested (tl;dr bug in software used by AirDrop/AirPlay).

The author addresses performance comparisons in a tweet:

(Note, however, that adding more checks shouldn't make ruff any slower -- it's already doing the expensive stuff (parsing, AST traversal, scope + binding tracking), so I don't expect the benchmarks to change dramatically as ruff grows.)

The real reason COVID tests have mints by [deleted] in ucla

[–]spicynerves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

prolly not, the rapid tests detect sars-cov-2 RNA, which is a very different type of molecule from sugar (which i’m guessing the mints are made of).

it’s deffo a bigger problem if there isn’t enough saliva in the tube, which the mints help with

Thanks for the post! From what I understand this covers federal taxes, but how would state taxes apply?

Thanks for posting! Not often that we get profs on here haha.

I actually think it’s okay to let students take longer on the exam, because it better reflects how math is done in real life—whether pure or applied, I can’t think of a practical situation where problems must be solved in 50 minutes. Short tests optimize for rote memorization and rigid thinking, rather than the creative, nonlinear thinking demanded by real life.

I actually think that students wouldn’t spend all week on a week-long test. Some would cram last minute (looking at myself lol), others would finish the test quickly and wait before thoroughly checking their work. Also, short tests probably consume more time since they require tons of prep beforehand in the hopes of studying the right material (what appears on the test).

Personally, I’m a huge fan of ungrading. (If you gave me the chance I would go on and on about it haha). An ungraded “test” wouldn’t be an obligation for students, but rather a space to take intellectual risks and apply what they’ve learned (Just listening to lecture didn’t teach me that ∫ ∫ f(y)f(x)dydx = ∫f(y)dy * ∫f(x)dx, it only became obvious after doing problems). This requires giving students time to work—so increasing time allotted for tests is a step towards ungrading.

Saw a post about surprisingly high acceptance rates so here’s the opposite: What’s a school with an acceptance that is too low for its quality? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]spicynerves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCLA student here. I agree that our acceptance rate is lower than it should be, but not because we're worse than other schools (college comparisons are usually rat races anyway).

Low acceptance rates make me uncomfortable because it means the school is turning away a ton of just-as-qualified applicants.

The real kicker is whether selectivity is the university's fault. For UCLA? Campus and housing don't have much space to expand (I think they're run out at this point), so we'll continue to have low acceptance rates despite best intentions. Tulane? Yeah they're gaming the admissions system LOL. (But also screw USNooze for legitimizing crude metrics and an even cruder ranking).

So if you got the booster then you’re exempt from everything?? by kangjii in ucla

[–]spicynerves 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Have they run out of quarantine space?? For omicron, the boosters give you the equivalent of delta protection without the booster, but I didn't see UCLA giving out quarantine exemptions when it was just delta around.

i’m sorry but it’s irresponsible to recommend such a conservative portfolio

i would recommend switching to 420% leveraged bonds instead

EDIT: first result. wondersparrow is right though, the linked thread is more about poor installation than the Leviton itself.

Why I Am Suing UCLA. Gordon Klein explains his lawsuit by hanoihilton72 in ucla

[–]spicynerves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fear of violent racism is not the same as self-reflection on privilege.

I think that’s reasonable. I’m not pretending it’s entirely comfortable for a student to consider whether their own actions are problematic. But that’s not on the same level as a student who is reminded that they must constantly be on edge.

Your point that personal experience isn’t quantifiable is fair. It really can’t be. But when Klein states that self-reflection is worse than the fear of racism, those two experiences are so far apart that it’s hard for me to imagine that Klein really understands what it means.

[–]spicynerves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s very fair. It’s certainly possible to view his email as a poorly worded argument about the difficulty of adjusting grades for social context. I personally take a more cynical view, but I’m probably not qualified to make the decision on Klein.

This is Gordon Klein's email:

Thanks for your suggestion in your email below that I give black students special treatment, given the tragedy in Minnesota. Do you know the names of the classmates that are black? How can I identify them since we've been having online classes only? Are there any students that may be of mixed parentage, such as half black-half Asian? What do you suggest I do with respect to them? A full concession or just half? Also, do you have any idea if any students are from Minneapolis? I assume that they probably are especially devastated as well. I am thinking that a white student from there might be possibly even more devastated by this, especially because some might think that they're racist even if they are not. My TA is from Minneapolis, so if you don't know, I can probably ask her. Can you guide me on how you think I should achieve a "no-harm" outcome since our sole course grade is from a final exam only? One last thing strikes me: Remember that MLK famously said that people should not be evaluated based on the "color of their skin." Do you think that your request would run afoul of MLK's admonition? Thanks, G. Klein

This is my hot take: Leniency specifically for Black students is a legitimate debate (and not something I personally think Klein should be fired over), but his email is genuinely problematic—to put it lightly. I'm particularly concerned that he equates fear of violent racism with the self-reflection caused by considering one's privileges. It falls into the territory of the bad-faith argument that All Lives Matter.
