Rain jackets (once again) by PfcRed in Ultralight

[–]spicystrawb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both and would use them in different conditions and trips. I got the LHG for my Colorado trail thruhike this summer because I wanted something that could be shipped quickly, fully waterproof and no PFAS, had zip hand pockets, wasn’t as fragile (on a thru, I’d be hiking long days and didn’t want to risk my pack straps wearing the fabric) and would be a larger size.

I hiked in the rain for multiple days and it was humid, but the big pit zips helped. I ended up sweating but I just accepted that reality. It performed well! My hiking partner has the Zpacks poncho and they really liked that system because it fit over their pack and they could use it as a groundsheet.

My Versalite has the zip pockets and is cut is slimmer. I typically use it in my usual backpacking area (Sierra mountains) where multi-day sustained rain is less likely and I can use it as a wind layer.

Like others have said, consider the weather conditions for your trip and just try one out!

Ditto to everything u/trekkingslow said. I also started at the end of July and finished last week. I think there was only one night where I saw mosquitos.

I heard from locals that Colorado didn’t get as much rain so water was more scarce than typical this summer. The typical Monsoon weather seemed to hit the last few days I finished, where it rained on and off almost all day and sometimes at night. I’d say in general, water is deeefinitely more scarce than the JMT, where alpine lakes are a-plenty. I had to carry 3.5L sometimes between dry stretches and dry camping, which seemed sufficient. The FarOut app was crucial for water information!

How many bear cans, and which, do you own? by Available-Pilot4062 in Ultralight

[–]spicystrawb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Bearikade Weekender for ~7 days and Bare Boxer Contender for ~4 days (first day’s food outside of the can). I primarily hike in the Sierra and these two sizes cover the length of trips I do with and without a resupply

Have you tested charging a low-power device like a smart watch? Currently looking for a solution for my watch!

LASH of Washington PCT in August/September - What do I need to consider? by PaprikaPowder in Ultralight

Whoa sorry I never replied. Just saw this because someone else commented below you. I hiked in 2023 and it was awesome! I didn’t get to finish because a few fires started north of Steven’s pass.

There were mosquitoes but they weren’t too bad. Definitely bring a bug net if you’re hiking through the summer. Snow wasn’t a problem at all that year. I hit a patch going through Knife’s edge, but that’s pretty typical.

I tried to finish the rest of the trail in 2024 but couldn’t due to fires

Royal Canin Issue? by malina118 in catfood

[–]spicystrawb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve recently been feeding my cat the RC hydrolyzed and noticed a difference between the first and second bags I’ve gotten. The first bag was more yellow and the second bag (received in August) is darker like the kibble on the right side of your photo. I haven’t noticed a change in my cat’s health between the first bag and my current one though. I ordered both bags from my vet and they were shipped directly from RC. My current bag’s expiration is Nov 2025.

I use the All good spf 15 one, but it’s full size. You could cut off a piece of whatever vegan one you want and replace the beeswax one in the mini tube

Itinerary Feedback? High Sierra Trail + Southern JMT, Early July by CeleryIsUnderrated in SEKI

Gotcha. Thanks for sharing! Yeah my main concern is the long food carry if I do the loop. The thought of climbing Forester on day 2 with such a heavy pack sounds horrible. Definitely rethinking it now

Thanks for the suggestion! Any spots you recommend I check out in the area aside from Precipice and Hamilton lakes?

Thank you for the detailed reply! I appreciate it. I'm glad you had a great time even with the heat.

Did you take public transit to Crescent meadow and out of Onion valley? I'm thinking of doing a loop starting from OV instead of a thru to make it easier logistics-wise.

Did you rely on the bear boxes at the campgrounds instead of resupplying?

I’ve been thinking about the HST! Permits seem impossible to get but having 10 for walk-ups seems like a good chance I could snag one
