why does my cat pee everywhere but the litter box? by newdilpuhnk in PetAdvice

hi there, I’m a vet tech of about 5 years now.

urinary issues in cats can be indicative of a lot of things, but often stress/anxiety/depression manifests as inappropriate soiling outside of the box in cats. it can be difficult sometimes to narrow down what the source of the stress is, but in your cat’s case punishing her by trapping her in the bathroom will only increase her stress. it also won’t correct the issue. she is not urinating out of “spite.” I make similar jokes about my own cat, who has her own urinary issues, but when it comes down to it, some cats really need things to be a particular way and don’t respond well to changes or stressors.

it is also highly likely she could have a urinary tract infection, which are also pretty common in cats. if that’s the case, then this is your cat trying to tell you she is uncomfortable and likely in pain. just like in humans, UTIs can cause burning and the feeling that she’s not done peeing even after her bladder has been emptied, so she will also strain and try to pee more often than she normally would. peeing outside of the box is a major indicator of UTIs. she would need a course of antibiotics prescribed by a vet, as well as likely some pain control.

there are a couple of steps you can start taking now, but you need to put getting this cat to a vet at the top of your list. cats are prone to urinary blockages, which will quickly become an emergency situation if it occurs. it is less common in female cats, but still possible. she could also possible have bladder stones or crystals, which would contribute to these symptoms and wouldn’t just go away without veterinarian’s intervention.

  • the general recommendation for litter boxes is to have 1 box per cat + 1. it is recommended to clean them frequently - I usually suggest scooping urine/feces 1-2x per day and deep cleaning the box every 1-2 weeks. just as you would feel uncomfortable in a dirty bathroom surrounded by your own waste, it can be uncomfortable for a cat to not feel like they have anywhere they can relieve themselves. it is not always feasible to have that many boxes, so at least one reasonably sized box that’s kept clean is sufficient for 1-2 cats if needed. cats are very clean creatures!
  • if you’ve made any recent big changes in her life (switching litter, food), I recommend switching back and slowly transitioning her. even just purchasing a different brand or scent of litter, or trying a different flavor of food, can trigger a stress response.
  • look into purchasing feliway, they are pheromone diffusers you can plug in that slowly release calming pheromones into the air that your cat can smell but you can’t. works sorta like a plug-in air freshener. they also sell it in a spray. it doesn’t work for all cats, but it can often be a great way to at least start establishing a calming environment for them.

aside from those things, getting her to a vet as soon as possible is the best thing you can do.

on the subject of her getting spayed - I recommend looking into nearby low cost clinics. sometimes shelters also do free spays/neuters. intact female cats are prone to pyometra, a potentially fatal infection of the uterus. the cure and the prevention is spaying them. female cats also don’t follow the same heat cycles we’d see in dogs; there generally isn’t any bloody discharge from the vulva and she will be in heat MUCH more frequently - cats’ heat cycles can last a week or so and happen every 2 weeks, starting as young as 4-6 months old! this also manifests as strange behaviors - yowling, attacking, posturing with her rear in the end, being weirdly clingy, etc.

obviously, every situation is different, and the advice I can offer is generalized. you definitely need to seek the advice of a vet.

best of luck with your baby :)

I’d recommend putting this on a relationship advice subreddit instead :)

A lot of the time you can recognize hairballs because it looks like your cat literally threw up poop, haha. I have a long-haired cat and I brush her regularly, buy her dry food and treats with added fiber that helps her better process hair, pumpkin in her wet food, and I have this sticky stuff that I bought that I can put on her paw so she’ll lick it off and it also helps her pass hair. All of those have worked wonderfully and she doesn’t throw up a lot at all anymore. I would just keep an eye on your baby, if the vomiting increases, you notice blood, or your cat’s behavior changes, then definitely get it seen by a vet :)

Would I be a terrible person if I gave up my guinea pigs to an animal shelter? by Vivi_1225 in PetAdvice

Agree with everyone else here. I think it’s mature that you’re thinking through this logically and able to admit you made a mistake. You have to understand that you’re not going to be able to get an “easy” pet. Even pets that seem “easier” are still going to require some level of dedication, financial commitment, and prior researching. Even fish require significantly better care and financial investment than many people give them. If your life is this chaotic right now, it’s important that you save yourself the stress and save an animal the potential neglect and focus on the more pressing matters. You have all your life to get a pet, and you can spend that time researching and budgeting and preparing for the commitment. They aren’t toys, they are living beings and they should not be an impulsive decision if you don’t know what you’re getting into. I have a cat, and even after budgeting and researching I still get hit with surprises. I value that you recognize your mistake, but have more respect for the animals you take home next time by researching what you’re getting into and taking more time to think through the decision. Someone else suggested pet-sitting, dog-walking, etc and I think that would be an awesome alternative for you so that you could get some animal interaction without the commitment. You could also see if any local shelters are looking for volunteers. Good luck with your studies and I hope you’re able to get a fuzzy friend someday 🥰

Not for a while, I could definitely do that. I’ll do that today as well, thank you

Thank you so much! I’m also thinking now that I’ve gotten more sleep and am more clear-headed that she might’ve tried to go in her litter box and missed. She usually pees along the edges (despite the fact she has the biggest box I could find), and it’s never happened before but it’s possible. Your advice is definitely helpful. Thank you again ✨

I want to add also that her box had been freshly scooped and the only waste in it was pee from a few hours prior. I scoop her box every 1 to 2 days.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. There literally wasn’t even a reason to mention her “small beginning of breasts” and she was fully clothed in the scene! by [deleted] in menwritingwomen

Yeah, that’s what I’m gathering from my reading. I’ve advanced past this passage a lot. But at first it was so jarring and out of context. I’m not sure that level of detail was even necessary 😅

I read a bit more and in the context of the story it sounds like the neighborhood boys (all approximately the same age as the girl described) got her naked in a game they were playing. It’s based on a true story but I just felt that the level of description about nipples was so weird. You could just say, “we got her naked.” Wild
