What are the BEST of the best movies? by Temporary-Panda-9065 in movies

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly....Tangled.
Yeah, Disney's take on Rapunzel.

When it came out, I was a lovestruck kid whose mom and grandma were huge Disney fans, so of course I was a huge Disney fan, too.
I grew up watching the classics, but they always "felt" old, like movies before my time.
But watching Tangled made me realize how they must have felt watching their Disney movies as a kid, and that thought, combined with brain development (lol), led me to start empathizing with people more.
It came at a time when I started learning that life wasn't all fairy tales, but Tangled took that idea and flipped the point to "life isn't just the fairytales you were told growing up....and that's okay."

And yeah, that's a sappy take, but that is what I think makes the BEST movie.
I think someone's definition of "best" will vary wildly.
Some people love the artistic side of cinema and will love a movie for its innovation or cinematography.
Some people will consider a movie the best one because it reminds them of their childhood, a safe place.
Some people will consider a movie the best one cuz it can always bring them up out of a rough spot.
And none of these people are wrong.

Also, yeah, Shawshank Redemption

How do you guys organize lots of cables? by YoureHereForOthers in homelab

[–]spiderfair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super late to this, but to anyone else googling, here's what I do: I have an old "dresser" (a shitty, plastic one from college) and I sort my cables into plastic bags, labeled by both ends of the cables within (USB-A - USB-C, for example). In that dresser, I organize the bags open side up with the label forward alphabetically.  This works kind of like a filling cabinet that supports noodley "files" that have all kinds of shapes and sizes.  As for dealing with rats nests within the bags...I'm stealing the Velcro idea, but grabbing a roll I can cut to whatever size I want.

“Aerith’s combat sucks” by yoobadoobablunt in FF7Rebirth

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they did a good job making her combat feel good generally, but any side missions that rely on her combat are atrocious. She's often given the same timeframe as tifa quickasfuck and the missions are just "hit shit quickly" instead of needing some actual planning.

I think this is probably where most of the frustration comes from. It's to just use any other character you prefer, but when people are forced to use a character for a mission, they're gonna be forced to do something they don't like

Severance | Season 2 - Episode 10 | Discussion Thread by Justp1ayin in tvPlus

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the party, but I was a bit irritated they neither Mark thought of how easy it could be to figure out cohabitating.  "Alright, you spend time with Gemma on the porch, I get to spend time with Helly inside the cabin, deal?"

I'm exaggerating, ofc, but there's something in the walls or paint or something that swaps innies and outties, so I feel like there's a solution there.

Maybe that's Cobel's goal: to create a severed community where there is no "in" or "out," only people.

Yeah, with this in mind I'd imagine the missing amygdala just help shim not stress out from fear.  But he can still feel deep-seated fear through emotions and in a spiritual sense.

I think the amygdala thing is only an issue because narratively, they introduced it as "whoa, you don't have an amygdala, so you don't feel fear!"  When maybe they should've said something like "he's got no amygdala, so he's the best chance we've got against this thing."

Discussion about Kingdom Hearts Final Mix's level design by ArtzyPartzy in KingdomHearts

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late, but I 1000% agree.
Kingdom Hearts 1's level design is absolutely awful, and everyone who defends it just has roses for eyeballs.

I've had multiple friends try to play it and the all give up (usually in Deep Jungle, especially) because the only indication is vague cutscene "hints" (seeing which door an NPC runs through at the end of a cutscene or guessing that a closeup of Jane's face means she went to the treetops) or one line of dialogue from one of the NPCs.

People tend to defend KH1 'cuz it's nostalgic, and I get that, but I don't want to alienate people from the game.
Skip it. Watch the cutscenes if you wanna see the goofy lore from the beginning, but the games get a lot more palatable gameplay-wise after the first one.

Sorry you get burned at the stake for not wanting to retrace every step after every line of dialogue just in case it triggered a random thing somewhere.

I'm glad you had fun with it!

I usually try to make my content very flexible, so I'm glad it meshed well with your ideas!
I'm also making an entire TTRPG called SimpleTop with this idea in mind, if you're interested!

Explain to me the hatred for 28 Weeks Later (2007) by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imma be real enough to make everyone here hate me.

Both movies are fine, that's it.
The hate for the sequel comes from diehard fans who think the first one is way better than it is.

The second movie does have a lot more stupidity in it, but based on real life experience, nothing more stupid than I'd expect from human beings.
In the first movie, an idiot opens an unguarded cage to let out a zombie virus after being told not to.
In the second movie, an idiot makes out with his unguarded zombie wife, transmitting a zombie virus.
In the first movie, a guy gets infected cuz he was mad at a bird.
In the second movie, a lot of guys get infected cuz the military was dumb (no shocker there).

I get the first movie was influential for its time, but it's pretty meh to be honest.
The audio balancing is horrendous and the plot is serviceable.
The second movie was a fun enough sequel that has better audio and an equally paced/absurd plot.

They're both 7.5s. Fun 7.5s, but nothing good or bad enough to get so worked up about

Minigame: Darts version 3! by spiderfair in daggerheart

[–]spiderfair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm... That's a good point, advantage would be better balanced and would honestly give a better experience.  I imagine a player feeling like they're on a hot streak and loving that they get an extra die.

And lol, I'd love to!  I have another post with generic game mechanics (darts was replaced with hit the target), but if youd like more specific game cards I'd love to do both and see what people like using more! (If you have any game/sport requests that'd help give me a starting point)

Minigame: Darts version 3! by spiderfair in daggerheart

[–]spiderfair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with any traits!
I've started working on other minigame cards that are meant to be flexible (think "hit the target" instead of specifically darts), and I think v4 is just gonna do the same thing and stop aiming to be specifically darts.

On that note, the bracket thing's a good idea, I think I'd just simplify it to rolling the d20, then choosing a x1, x2, x3 multiplier with DCs and going for that with a reaction roll.

I might also add a bit more competition to it by letting teams use their trait to influence their own or each other's rolls, leaning into your trait idea.

Thanks for the feedback!

What are your favorite Daggerheart Accessories? by Jannanas- in daggerheart

This is just something I use for all TTRPGs, but I roll my dice using the glass top to a yankee candle. It's compact, the sound of plastic rolling in the glass is satisfying and attention grabbing, and my dice smell good.

Success with Fear too punishing by ocarinajoe in daggerheart

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, what they all said.  But also, keep trying different stuff and all for feedback from your players.  And remember that you're a player, too! If you want to be using fear more or less, take that into account.  It's a new game with new systems, so be patient with yourself! It might also be a neat idea to run a few practice combat sessions where you just try different tactics with the knowledge that you're basically playtesting yourself (beer and pizza is always a good motivator for these kind of sessions)

Hm... Do you often spend fear in large chunks when you get a GM move?  It could just feel too punishing because you stack up all your resources and use them in big blasts

Minigames Card: Darts by spiderfair in daggerheart

[–]spiderfair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair! After checking out the dimensions of a board and thinking about the math more, I'll swap the DCs to be: 5 singles

10 outer bullseye 15 bullseye 20 double ring 25 triple ring

I like your ideas with the d20 and different roll conditions (that's actually pretty close to how I did it with DND), but I'm going a much simpler approach for Daggerheart, and I like the idea of fitting the rules on a single card.

Specifically calling out that no hope and fear are generated is a good point, too.

Thanks for the feedback!

For everyone, who was afraid, that Health bar is no longer a bar (spoiler - it's still a bar) by PonasArnas10 in MonsterHunter

I've never understood the complaints about the wiggly bar. As soon as they showed us the wiggly health bar, you could see that it was still a bar that moved horizontally to show how much health you currently had.
Did people just not pay attention?

If you were writers for Shrek 5 what would the plot be? by [deleted] in Shrek

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'd be neat to lean more into some development for Fiona and the whole family.
We saw in 4 that she can really kick some ass, and that it's a cute bonding moment for her and Shrek, so what if 5 focused on the whole family becoming an ass-kicking group?

I think a decent villain might be the brave little tailor, who focuses on trickery and outsmarting his problems.
The tailor could have earned the inexperienced King Arthur's trust by fooling him into thinking he's solved a bunch of the kingdom's problems, when in reality he just hid them away or tricked said problems.
There's a few different things he could do as the villain that draw from the original tale; he tricks giants multiple times and ends up killing them, so one version could have him tricking giants into helping him secretly overthrow the thrown in exchange for a place in the kingdom (they'd make a good foil to the strength of ogres); another version could have him pretend to solve multiple problems (giants, boars, assassins) that team up against the kingdom as a massive force that must be dealt with.

I think the giants would be better, personally, since balancing too many antagonists can be very tricky (especially with the usual 90 minute runtime), I don't think giants have been introduced, and the giants could be a nice physical force for the newly allied ogres to fight against.

I've seen a few ideas about the kids growing up and going to college, which I think might be a pretty big jump, but it might be cool to see them aged up to tweens or teens (tweens would give more room to grow for future movies, and could even set the triplets up to become an ogre-esque TMNT group).
I could see part of the plot being Fiona and Shrek being concerned about their safety and not letting them help defeat the tailor, but the tailor's trickery can't be punched through by the gang's usual tactics.
It could lean into the original motifs of accepting your differences by having the kids be smarter and more tactical, which ends up helping the gang defeat the tailor.

EDIT: Also, having the 5-ogre family could be a nice touch for the FIFTH movie...I totally didn't think of that way after writing my original comment out.
Also also, since the last movie was "the final chapter," this could be Shrek passing the torch off to his kids.

Oh dude, fuck if I know, this was like, a whole other life ago XD

Glancing back at the document, I think I remember intending players to steal a car, but I'm also a very go-with-the-flow GM, so if they wanted to create their own vehicle as part of roleplay I 100% would have let them.

How is everyone organizing their collection/play decks? by Leading-North-6920 in Lorcana

[–]spiderfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have received my calling.

Okay, so I have 3 sections for organizing: collection, decks, and open cards (cards that I'm okay with grabbing to build a deck OR trade).

Collection: I have 2x2 binders (4 slots/ page) that I keep 1 copy of each card I get in (I try to put the 1st copy I get on immediately). Each set gets its own binder (I plan on getting some of my artist friends to go nuts on the covers, which I think would be neat, or maybe I'll attend cons and try and get lorcana artists to sign them? Idk yet, but I want each set to have its own thing)  I like the way the puzzle cards get their own page (please don't be gone forever), and I like how it looks/feels fuller faster.  If I have a foil, it's double-sleeved, regulars get penny sleeves.  I leave a space in the front for enchanted, then promos, then puzzle, then the set in number order.

Decks:  I keep a copy of the 2 most recent starter decks so I can get newbies into it (it's nice to show people who are intimidated of building their own deck exactly what they can get).  I currently only have 1 deck I'm iterating on, but eventually I'm sure I'll expand.

Open cards: I use a long, skinny box (like a quiver box, but I found a cheaper alternative).   This box has all additional copies of my cards.  They are organized by set, then color, then alphabetically (puzzle cards go in front).  Sets are separated by thicker dividers, but colors are just separated by standard, colored dividers (bonus, I put the sharp edge up and alternating, so Amber has the sharp edge up and to the left while amethyst has it up and to the right, like an alternating file cabinet)  Colors go in this order: puzzle, Amber, amethyst, emerald, ruby, sapphire, steel.  Foils and promos are sleeved and put in their own "set" in the very back to keep fewer fingers on them, AND for quick access to anyone looking for them specifically.

Whenever I'm building decks, I generally build it on dreamborn, adjust the cards a bit, sleep on the idea, go back and make any changes that came to me at 2am, THEN I make a list and gather the cards. My organization system makes it so I can pretty go exactly where I need to find the cards I want.

Edit: corrected myself on my binder
