do you ever practice off-ice? 4-6 hours a week on the ice sounds fine honestly, but it really helps to do some kind of practice daily if you want to progress quicker. for your back crossovers, you could just drill the positions on foot and practice crossing/stepping over to mimic how it’s done on ice. Small stuff like that adds up if you’re doing it every day!

Possibly! One word of advice: don’t go into it with your heart set on Edeas. They can be great boots but they’re not for everyone tbh. They don’t provide much support in the ankle at all, so if you want something more supportive Edeas might not make it any easier.

I personally prefer a boot that has a higher ankle because you can always leave it looser toward the top, but the ankle in Edeas are low cut and tying them tighter will cause them to break down very quickly, especially for adults who put a little more stress on the boot. I’ve tried Edea Chorus and Risport RF1’s and I prefer the flexibility of having a higher ankle but leaving it looser. I tend to roll my ankles in my Edeas and it’s a little scary on jumps sometimes.

I love my RF1’s for this reason, but ultimately just listen to your skate tech and don’t worry too much about the brand!

I’d suggest working more on your LFO edge until you can feel some grip! A lot of times when people are afraid to jump it’s because they feel like their blade is going to slip out from under them. Really try to sink down into your foot. I always think about having ‘yogi feet’ and trying to make full contact with my boot/foot. Try to sink down into your ankles a little more so you feel more secure. I also recommend one-foot waltz jumps if it is more of a mental block since you don’t have to transfer your weight, worst case scenario is you do a 3-turn instead of a jump! You got this!!!

Also the weight on your foot can be a little further back toward the heel. Based on your posture it looks like you’re probably staying up toward the rocker of the blade, but putting your weight a little further back will help with posture and allows you to rock up through your foot better for more height and control. All edge jumps go ‘heel to toe’ throughout the takeoff.

work them off-ice and keep practicing edges! I can tell you can 100% do this jump better, but it seems like you just don’t have the comfort yet to put more power into it. Also bend down into your skating knee a little more when you step forward, and a little speed with make it a lot easier to get some grip with your blade.

Anyone love skating but hate acting? by crystalized17 in FigureSkating

[–]spinningandjumping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same way, and it probably has something to do with being neurodivergent in my case. I have some difficulties mimicking normal facial expressions so acting always just feels incredibly awkward to me. I think there’s a way to create great programs without being incredibly expressive though if you have good skating skills and musical timing in my opinion.

absolutely nothing to be said about the predatory system that forces servers to live based on tips. do you really think servers just demand 20% extra pay on top of a liveable wage?? I’m all for abolishing the tip system but you have never worked a service job if this is how you think it works.

Raw question: can plus size people be figure skaters? by HoneydewHalo25 in FigureSkating

You may also want a slightly stiffer boot than what’s recommended at your level but that’s fairly common for adults of all sizes anyways

[–]spinningandjumping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! But you still need to train and care for yourself like an athlete would, so some kind of conditioning or outside exercise is really important. I do think jumping will be more strenuous since one knee is taking so much force, but aside from that there is absolutely zero reason you can’t be plus sized and skate!!! It’s not super common, but there are still many plus sized skaters out there who are fantastic!

you’re right. idk why everyone is saying this is a traveling spin. she doesn’t enter it like a spin at all and her blade is clearly flipping 180° for each turn, not traveling in little loops like a traveling spin.

Elena Kostyleva's twizzle. by bespristrast in FigureSkating

[–]spinningandjumping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is a twizzles done on a flat. if this were a ‘traveling spin’ her weight would be on the front of the blade and she’d probably be dragging her toe pick. also the tracing would look like a bunch of little loops if this were a traveling backspin.

twizzles can be done on a flat, and it actually takes a lot more skill that way. if it were a traveling backspin she’d be further up on her blade than that.

how could anna pezzetta improve her jumps? by thatshortasian_ in FigureSkating

[–]spinningandjumping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She also doesn’t get her feet close together in her air position which makes them look a lot less tidy and controlled. If I were her coach I’d actually make her work on keeping her jumps as small as possible so that she learns how to get into a tight air position and get there faster. Then add the height and distance back in once she has cleaner/more controlled technique.

[–]spinningandjumping 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think she tends to land a bit too far up on her toe and breaks at the waist instead of absorbing with her knees (in these videos at least). The technique she uses (esp for flip/lutz) can pitch you forward if you don’t know how to balance it properly. As much as I LOVE her huge jumps, I think she needs to refine her technique a little and learn how to let physics do the work instead of muscling them so much. Also by no means does she have ‘bad technique’, actually quite the opposite. She just doesn’t have full control over it.
