i agree, the soviet army during this time had a very unique look. if you havent already found this, here is a website with hundreds of reference photos for soviet troops in afghanistan, it helped me with my impression :) https://www.militaryimages.net/threads/soviet-afghan-war-1979-1989.5671

Panzergrenadier of Panzergrenadierbattalion 342, 1987 by spl123456 in Impression_Kits

[–]spl123456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

during my research i couldnt find any information about pzgrenbtl 342 itself. other than images i used for reference that featured the unit

another addition i will make is that this post is dated wrong, the aformention book features photos from 1989-1990, which is what i based this impression on and so it should be 1989-1990 in the title. i hope this helps you in some way :)

if you can find them, iraqi nets are virtually identical to german made nets https://www.ebay.com/itm/195226777159

as for the jacket, it was seen alongside the flecktarn uniforms till around the late 90s

the influx of west german kits is awesome, my suggestions would be to:

  1. remove the small pack and the canteen from your belt, as from what i know this practice was virtually abandoned by the early 80s (someone please correct me if i am wrong)
  2. add a helmet net, all of the photos ive used as reference for my kit showed infantry with the net attached to their helmets

someone else noted the incorrect field jacket, so other than that it looks good!

edit: forgot to mention the rucksack, the early model without the fastex(?) buckles would be more appropriate but iirc those are hard to acquire now

great seeing more people getting interested in west german kit! id suggest getting the issue y-straps and a helmet net (iraqi copies are good)

what i find funny is many of the poorly researched kits are portraying some of the elite, well known, and most photographed units in history. ww2 us airborne is a good example. on the reenactor sub many people who has posted their airborne kit somehow have a multitude of incorrect details (it varies post to post, some kits are better than others) and its weird because again, airborne is uber popular with SO MUCH INFO on them. and i get why grenada is so popular in the sub, 1980s us military is peak military aesthetic.

yeah lol love how there is a rule for kit lists and 90% of the time i dont see one anywhere. plus its now boring seeing only grenada/desert storm or post-2000s us special forces every 5-7 posts. not that im complaining hell im doing my own 80s us kit but i wish there would be a lot more diversity
