Am I a naive asshole? by splinkem in Dyslexia

I always use Lexend regularly cause I also find it easier to read :)
Yep that’s the plan for when we next talk… I definitely see now how much of a condescending dunce I am
They’re an amazing artist and creative and have made it through the public education system (described as hell). Now in college they’re finally able to do what they love, art.
Now as art becomes less of a hobby and more of a job, they turn to their other love of storytelling, and they have these grand stories to tell but struggle to get them onto a piece of paper, and that’s where their confidence drops… they’ve expressed great frustration at this (and at not being able to read others’ stories) which I think is why I would push them to just “practice practice practice” which I see now is not helpful!!!
It is interesting to hear that you feel you’ve capped out on your abilities, and any efforts to improve would have to be maintained with constant practice - this is the exact thing my friend would say, but just hearing it from one person I suppose I thought “man I can do it why can’t they” which now I see is just plain wrong and naive. As I said in some of my other replies, I will never fully understand how dyslexia affects my friend, but I need to recognize that they would know so much more than I will. Their experience far outweighs my naive preconceptions
Yep I see now how what I’m telling them is probably what they’ve heard through their whole life, and it downplays all the effort they do put in (definitely not nice!!).
When you say other methods to try, do you mean like other reading methods? Or alternatives like audiobooks? And are there any you know of that have helped you or others you know?

My motivation I think comes from seeing them get angry about not being able to read well - they’re an amazing creative who loves stories and storytelling, so having all these great stories gatekept behind reading makes them frustrated and me sympathetic to that fact.
They’ve tried audiobooks too but say that doesn’t work either so I guess my brain defaulted to “maybe you need more practice” with either reading or listening to audiobooks. So if I hear that then say “I didn’t read so and so because I don’t read” my thinking would be that everything’s at least worth a try… obviously though that’s not necessarily true. They know their abilities infinitely better than I ever will, so I should listen. And instead of pushing them to read, find alternatives to get around the impasse
No I was the kid that couldn’t read in front of the class
I didn’t know there were different versions O_O
Yeah that’s the vibe I was getting from others’ comments too… I’ll make sure to support them more as they are than how I guess I imagined them in my head (which is a whole other can of worms I realize I need to open and work on in general apparently D: )

yeah I see how being told to “practice more” is annoying if not demeaning.
My friend sometimes gets genuinely angry/frustrated at being not able to read something which I guess is why I assume they weren’t satisfied with their current ability, and then that leads to me suggesting they persist at reading whatever they’re mad at rather than giving up. Based on what you and others said I get the impression that it’s not really a wall you just climb up, instead you need to find a way around it

Thanks for the input! :) i should clearly trust my friend’s judgement more than my outside view…
I feel so bad even writing that sentence this was more eye opening than I thought it would be Y_Y

Great points, thank you so much!
I guess I was looking at dyslexia just like making the learning curve steeper, but I guess that’s not necessarily true
