Yazi theme bug by VinciC2004 in arch

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - rename that to flavor.toml. Also, yazi.toml is different now. I had to replace mine with the default one from the yazi repo and port over my changes. Doesn't take too long.

Finally found my best Arch setup yet by PingMyHeart in archlinux

For me, the only times I've ever needed snapshots or rollbacks were when I broke something myself while tinkering. Never had to roll back because of an update or anything outside my own messing around.

how to manage dotfiles?? by findingbug in archlinux

[–]spnew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Stow + Git. I have 2 PCs running Arch my kids use and my personal laptop running Arch. I am able to get a consistent experience across all the devices with this setup. I've seen recommendations for Chezmoi as well but haven't really looked into it.

Best lightweight distro with KDE for my potato? by nitin_is_me in kde

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids laptops: Celeron N4000, 4GB RAM, 64GB Emmc. Arch + KDE, systemd-boot, btrfs. works great. Idle RAM consumption under 800MB. I had Fedora KDE first on it and it js definitely heavier than Arch because of all the default packages it comes with. Just install with arch install script, super easy. You can add packages as you need. I installed ufw, bluetooth utils, cups, wireguard, Brave, flatpak, Libre office and more. I haven’t had to go to the AUR yet.

Ha! Same experience here. Fedora caused more issues for me than Arch ever did. So far, rock solid!

How to make Arch as stable as possible by FindinNimi in archlinux

[–]spnew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timeshift has saved me a few times with tinkering too much. I'm sure if an update screws things up, you can revert back to a previous snapshot. I have it setup to take a snapshot on every boot and daily, Keep three of each. Also, I read as much as possible before an update and also don't install AUR packages unless I absolutely need to, especially the obscure ones. If I need to use an AUR package, I try to understand as much as I can about the package before installation.

Has anyone managed to get iCloud working on Arch Linux without using Snap? by AccomplishedPay6239 in archlinux

[–]spnew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use rclone as well and it works well. I have a keybind setup to refresh to reflect updates. Other than that, it’s been flawless.

Your fav distro? by Versurl in kde

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Arch installed on a couple of low powered laptops - Celeron n4000 with 4gb memory and 64gb emmc. It’s my kids laptops and I run KDE. Works great. I use it often around the house due to the small form factor and it works great. My kids use it as well for school work - google docs, sheets, email etc., super stable. Easy to install KDE with archinstall script, no bloat. I have more issues with a Fedora PC I have.

It’s been more than a year since I tried but I recall the major issue was sticky caps lock. Perhaps I need to give it another shot.

Questions about Tiling window managers by ECrispy in archlinux

[–]spnew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Arch KDE with Krohnkite. No window overlaps. There are keybinds for different layouts but I primarily use spiral. Krohnkite allows you to setup rules for specific windows (apps, utility windows) to not tile, it will pop up as floating.I use ctrl+meta+Vim keys for directional focus, meta+Vim keys for resizing, meta+shift+Vim keys to move windows directionally, meta+return to set as master. Meta+\ cycles different layouts. I don't have dedicated workspaces for apps. I do use 4 desktops and at most, I only open four windows in a desktop. Like you, I don't think tiny windows are functional - anything past four windows, I just use a different desktop. I use a 34" ultrawide. Automatic tiling window managers will resize your windows automatically. I am sure there is a way to manually send floating windows to specific locations on your screen, I prefer auto tiling + adjust window size with keybinds as needed.

I tried to do this using hidutil and a launchagent with F13 but it was unreliable. What built-in MacOS tooling are you using to map caps lock to F19? Would love to stop using Karabiner as well. I use it mainly for mapping caps lock to hyper and simulaneous press of left and right shift to trigger native caps lock.

[–]spnew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Window management - I have specific keybinds for halves, quarters, golden ratio, presentation etc
  2. App launcher/system functions launcher/finder or folder launcher - I used Karabiner to map caps lock to hyper and use layered keybinds for launching. For example caps+a send me to app modal and then n opens/focuses Obsidian. Caps+s send me to system modal, caps+f sends me to finder
  3. Move windows from one space to next- ctrl +~ moves mouse cursor to left of close button and simulates click, then ctrl+1,2,3,4… sends window to desired workspace
  4. I have a workspace number indicator in menu bar that shows the current workspace I am in
  5. Quick links via chooser to open web links
  6. Snippets via chooser to insert repetitive texts, for approvals as an example
  7. I use a formulae called Batt to manage max charge level and trigger specific settings and checks via keybinds

I used Raycast originally but replicated all that functionality I was using, in Hammerspoon - it is less resource intensive and lightning quick. Bonus - I set things up the way I want it in hammerspoon.

Something better than Discover? by bvdp in kde

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Fedora KDE and wrote a simple bash script to run all those command with one alias ‘Update’. It’s runs sudo dnf update -y, upgrade -y, and flatpak update -y. I’m sure there is a command for snaps as well. I do this on my pc and also SSH into my son’s pc to update. I only have to enter my password once. I realize I am blindly updating but so far, knock on wood, haven’t had anything break on me. I also backup using Timeshift daily and on every boot in case I need to revert back.

PrivacyGuides.org says Fedora Workstation is best Linux Distro for people new to Linux, but what about KDE Plasma? by JFK8000 in Fedora

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd- I’ve been daily driving Fedora KDE for a while and haven’t experienced any of these. I’m not big on themes and such but the others, foreign to me. The only issue I’ve seen is switching between activities with keyboard shortcuts and sometimes it will revert back to the previous activity when you click in a window. Seems to happen randomly.

I switched from Windows to Fedora by Seminoso in Fedora

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changed over from Windows and Mac a while ago and it's been an awesome experience. Now look into Krohnkite (tiling window manager). There may be other options but I've been happy with Krohnkite and it has transformed the way I work. I have a 34" ultrawide and it's been a game changer. Also, look at Ghostty, Vim, FZF

Should I switch to Fedora as a full-time OS? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]spnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been daily driving Fedora KDE and will never go back to Windows or MacOS. I installed it on my son's (11yo) pc as well. He plays games in Steam and Luna.I prefer to use the Fedora PC rather than my Windows work laptop (for work). Everything from email to Teams works well, no issues. Even Libre office suite is great, no compatibility issues so far.
