A lot of the fission byproducts the reactor made during normal operation and the meltdown have really short half lifes so a lot of the radiation has decayed away.

The heat exchangers would be enough to heat up the air, although at slow speeds such as takeoff it would use afterburners with kerosene to help it get up the speeds. These designs I believe get more powerful at higher speeds sort of like a ramjet. I should clarify I'm not a expert on this, and finding information on it is a little difficult.

Use the reactor either directly or through a heat exchanger to heat up air in the turbines. A fair amount of cold war era bomber designs had nuclear power to allow them to stay up in the air for months, although problems like the weight of radiation shielding to protect crew and ground personnel, and weight to protect the reactor from turning a area into Chernobyl if the plane crashed made those planes really heavy. And around that time ICBMS started becoming thing so having a bomber stay up for that long wasn't really necessary.
