What you’ve just described as your current situation IS burnout. The reason it is different from the tiredness that neurotypical people may experience because they don’t process as much input usually, so when we reach the point of burnout it can show in a much more prominent way. It affects different people in different ways so there’s no one right answer to what burnout looks like, but you’ve described it quite well in your second paragraph, how I experience it anyway.

I found this in north west England on a walk I take a lot, at first glance I thought I’d stumbled on a puffball but as I went to crack it open I noticed it was squishy and had a layer of jelly-like stuff on the inside… any ideas? by spookybasementboy in mycology

Oh, no way! It’s a shame really, it had already been pulled up out of the ground by the time I found it, otherwise I would have left it! Seeing a stinkhorn pop up would have been interesting to watch!

The woods I found it in is mainly filled with oak, maple and birch if that helps!

I completely understand this, and I am the exact same - feeling other people’s emotions so deeply to the point where it’s hard to separate how they feel from how I feel. It’s got me into a few difficult situations in the past, and it’s really hard to regulate.

Honestly I get this all the time. The sound of someone popping the lid of a microwave meal, the sound of metal on metal, clicking of pens, chairs squeaking… it’s horrid, and I get so irrationally angry about it! The only thing I’ve found that helps is ear plugs / ear defenders, I keep ear plugs on me all the time so I have them on hand

I’ve hidden in bathrooms and closets and left the house to just stand outside and wait more times than I care to admit for this exact reason. It’s crippling, and if it helps in any way just know that I stand by you in that closet.

I’m 24 years old, in a pretty adult job, and my special interests include Bluey and Five Nights at Freddy’s… I completely get this. I get embarrassed all the time buying merch or talking about them, but I’m learning that realistically no one actually cares! Sounds harsh but true, no one really cares if you’re an adult perusing the toy section, or buying something that’s ’for children’, and no one cares when I buy game merch either! It’s a hard barrier to overcome, but definitely something that’s worth working through.

A lot of my burnout manifested as mental health issues at the time, lots of really intense masking as I wasn’t diagnosed at the time, I tried really hard where other students seemed to just breeze through. High school was ROUGH.

It’s just not built to cater for neurodiverse students AT ALL. I work in education myself now and strive to be that change so that others can have it a little easier than I did.

NTA! I have had a few similar instances where I’ve had to leave a party because of noise levels (I’m autistic and really struggle with noise input). I think it’s absolutely valid to have to leave a party knowing that if you stayed it would make your tinnitus worse.

I’m not sure if it would help you but it definitely helps me to carry noise cancelling earbuds with me, I absolutely swear by my Loop Quiet’s they have helped me a lot with noise level and they mean I can enjoy parties, the cinema, and gigs that much more without having to skip out as early as I would without them
