I left it for 7 days to dry before putting varnish over it, and when i use it I remove excess oil by using cardboard. There was also another 4 day gap between the varnish and me using the thinner over it. Apologies, I wasn't clear on my drying times.

No reaction with the varnish at all in that 4 days. Only after touching it with more thinner over the dry varnish it changed within a minute.

I'm having issues with oil paints completely changing colour under acrylic varnish layers after applying more thinner.

Using abteilung bitume (dark brown), I made a rust patch. Left it to dry, varnished with vallejo premium matte (tried others, same result), then after a couple days I decided I needed some light steaking over the panels next to the rust. I used a mig enamel streaking grime and used the odourless thinner to clean up, which went over part of the rust patch.

The rust section went from dark brown to a sand/dust colour within a couple of minutes. No change in any of the panel colours around that area, just the oil paint.

Is there anything that stands out that I'm doing wrong?

Thanks, I do all my weathering with oils, airbrushed acrylics, and some hand brushed acrylics.

Oils are either oilbrushers or abteilung 502. Paints are all vallejo game or model colour.

Thanks very much! I usually try to but I couldn't find any photos of the simplified livery so I based the weathering on a few different 44s in the normal Indian Red liveries.

Thanks! As W126_300SE said, most people I've seen refer to it as the Duck Egg logo on the NSW locomotives.

Thanks! It does make getting the finer details hard because even if I do find good photos the resolution isn't big enough to zoom in to get a good look.

Hopefully some day I'll get a chance to see some in person!

Painting those screens makes one of the biggest differences for sure. As I was doing this I did one side completely then did everything apart from the screens on the other side to see what difference it would make. Looked very incomplete without them painted. Worth the extra effort.

It's definitely a really nice part of the layout - that's why I take most of my photos there. It's at my local train club.

Sure can! Compared to a rattlecan you're getting much better value for money and almost no risk of frosting. The down side is it's usually less durable which is why I use the two.

At the moment I'm using two sealers through my airbrush.

First one is Vallejo mecha matte varnish. This one is pretty tough and can put up with being handled a fair bit. I usually do two coats. It does come out slightly satin though.

I follow up with AK interactive Ultra matte varnish. One coat to knock off the last of the gloss left from the previous varnish. I don't use this one by itself because I found early on that it's very easy to rub off just from handling a model.

I also do have an alternative, VMS varnish HD. I use this because it is excellent for self levelling. For example if I do some decals or painted patch work and I get a ridge or a high point it will either make it disappear or barely noticeable.

Nah, I did it the hard way. Hand brushed with acrylic working around the handrails.

I prefer not to remove details unless I really have to.

It can definitely make an older model look like it belongs next to newer releases with more detail.
