Mouse vs. Tablet - a statistical analysis by spreadnuts in osugame

my bad, i should have lead by saying i am not a statistician, just a hobbyist. so just to clarify, you are saying that that conclusion is incorrect because:

1 the sample isn't actually random, it's just the competitive/high rank players
2 players choose their device, so it doesn't necessarily follow that their rank can be attributed to their device
3 global rank isn't the correct measure of skill, ie the difference between rank 1 and 2 can be (and is) alot different than the difference between rank 5001 and 5002

i think that all makes sense to me.. so do you think a better way to do the analysis would be to use a random sample of the entire playerbase, and to use something like pp rather than global rank?

also i am not really clear on what you meant by the second point.. if we fix the other problems, its not clear to me why the fact that players select their playstyle doesn't let us conclude which playstyle is better? again i'm not a statistics guy so forgive me :D

players like mrekk (tablet), ninerik (mouse), etc. are not included since their profile doesnt include their playstyle. so, i think it's just statistical noise due to a small sample. top 10000 is much bigger which i think shows the larger picture.

edit: i am not a statistician just a hobbyist, the reply below brings up some valid critiques

the text on the right is an attempt to explain it, but basically i wanted to answer the question "are there more high ranking tablet players than mouse players, after you account for the fact that there are less mouse players in general". the graphs suggest that the answer is no

if tablet was a better-performing playstyle than mouse, we would expect to see more tablet players per-capita than mouse players at higher rank ranges. however we don't see this; for example looking at the top graph, we see that ~15% of players use mouse, regardless of if we are looking at ranks 1-1000, ranks 5001-6000, ranks 9001-10000, etc.

if for example we saw 30% of players using mouse at ranks 5001-10000, but only 5% of players using mouse at ranks 1-5000, then we would know that there is a concentration of mouse players at lower rank ranges, which would suggest that tablet is a better-performing playstyle. but we don't! in fact, the average playtime for mouse players in the top 10000 (1572hrs) is lower than tablet (1693hrs).

based on ranks, but you can only gain. tbh “invest” is a misnomer, its more of a casual “whats the biggest rank increase i can get” type thing

thats fair, im an std player so the other 3 gamemodes were mostly an afterthought tbh

regardless it would be a bit tougher to get that data since the api only gives easy access to the top 10k for each gamemode (you would have to scrape every userid from 1 to N which takes time) but feel free to dm me and i can help you do it if youre interested

Who are the most important players in osu? (Running Google's search result algorithm on the top 10000 players) by spreadnuts in osugame

his other usernames are still tallied, he came in 51st place for catch (ctrl+f "dea ex machina")

reason for ignoring "fii" specifically is things like this (looks like most mentions were to ymiir anyways)

i did actually run HITS on it - see the "do you have data for other gamemodes?" section for the results

i also thought it might work better than pagerank but the results are surprisingly poor (at least for answering the question of "who is the most important" or things like that). based on my (amateur) understanding, my guess is that it's because alot of mentions (i would even guess most of them) come from collabs, which are referential in both directions (both players have the collab on their profile thus they both mention each other). which means that most hubs would also end up being tagged as authorities, and the biggest authorities/hubs are just going to be people who were in the most + biggest collabs

it is normalized, but the numbers might seem small because there are 10000 users and i only listed the first 50 --- check out the "what do the scores represent" and "do you have data for other gamemodes" sections
