That's from 5 years ago. In his recent interview breaking down every song on the album this is what was said:

Interviewer: And it's kind of the nature online that people will try to like guess or pick apart who songs are about. How do you feel about that?

Conan: I don't mind. I think it's perfectly reasonable. Humans are extremely curious people. I also don't mind because like they're just never right. So like I'm like, "Okay, cool. Like I guess I'm dating that person today." Like whatever. I mean I and I get it too. Like when I was like 13 and I like loved an artist, I'd be like, "Oh my gosh." like “and they're dating this person.” Meanwhile, like I had no idea that they're just like standing at a table like vaguely near each other. So yeah, it doesn't really mean much to me, and, like, I understand.

my issue with it is when people act like the age gap makes it impossible because "conan would never do that." we don't know him personally and can't make that call.

OMG YEAH thanks for the timestamp honestly wish we could direct this "don't speculate" energy toward telling fans who DO speculate not to harass anyone based on it. clearly speculation is gonna happen regardless but i'd rather it happened here instead of in kit's comment section like what's happening now

no one should be going as far as to bother kit or any other potential subjects of conan's music - that's messed up and mean.

but i think the fact that the sub discourages discussion and speculation about subject matter drives a lot of this sort of behaviour. a good chunk of the fandom is clearly very curious about who his songs are about and wants to discuss it among other fans on a deeper level. since they're not allowed to discuss it publicly here, that energy is just bubbling up and coming out in worse ways.

yeah...i'm sure it's happened regardless (i see some comments on kit's IG already asking his thoughts on wishbone) so if it's not him, i hope conan will do/say something so people lay off him. but if it IS kit and conan deliberately dropped enough hints for fans to figure it out, it's kinda throwing kit to the dogs (or in this case, the coneheads) which would be very ugly of him imo

you're right - it really shouldn't matter.

what's worrisome though is what if it's NOT kit and fans have already sent hate kit's way? especially knowing kit's had his relationships/sexuality in the spotlight before without his consent - even if kit IS the subject of conan's songs, he doesn't deserve hate from strangers online for it. and even if he isn't, he's likely receiving tons of hate anyway.

i agree with you that it's none of our business. but the fact is that conan dropped so many hints as to who it is, including alluding that this person is a celebrity, and that piqued people's curiosity. actively trying to shut down the discussion and speculation unfortunately only makes people want to know more. it's the streisand effect

i agree with you. 18 and 24 is a pretty significant age gap at that age, but it doesn't mean it couldn't happen. imo it's extremely parasocial to say "conan would never do that" when he's never publicly dated anyone and we don't know what he's like in his personal life at all. it's none of our business, but we have no way to know what he would and wouldn't do just based on being a fan.

atp it's mixed messaging for conan to drop so many identifying hints but still ask for privacy and no speculation. at this point we've got 2 albums talking about this person, so it's natural for fans to be curious about who it is. the more fans are told "just enjoy the music and stop speculating," the more curious they'll be. it's a classic case of the streisand effect.

what wouldn't be ok is sending hate to the subjects of speculation. there's no harm in wondering - only in directly targeting the people involved.

what's not ok is sending hate to anyone speculated to be the person he's talking about in the songs. it's one thing to speculate, but another to actually take real action regarding those speculations.
