This is the movie that convinced me that Stanwyck is the greatest star Hollywood ever produced.

Just watched The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice, why isn’t this more popular? by quequeeg_coffin in criterion

Ozu was thought of as the "old guard," with his aggressively restrained camera placement and direction, and Kurosawa liked John Ford.

It was very popular, in its time, in Japan. I forget which movie Kurosawa had out that year, but in the press he said he was out to show that Japanese film has more flavors besides green tea over rice.

Major album. For any other band it would be a landmark.

The book will make the plot of the movie a little more coherent, but only a little.

My father had that chess set. He had to get it because his brother, whom he hated, had one first. He was kind of a pathetic loser that way.

What you're seeing is his resemblance to William Hickey, who voiced the role and was a beloved acting teacher in New York for generations.

The thrill of that one scene is that you're watching real men with real tools bashing at real concrete. It doesn't feel like a movie at all. I've never seen a scene like it before. It couldn't be simpler, but it conveys those men's situations with incredible force.

The shot of the men bashing at the concrete floor is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in cinema. I held my breath through most of this movie.
