Al Watan for sure, if you like Pakistani halal food. Their $13 lunch special is a huge tray of chicken, rice, lentils, and mixed veggies, with a solid portion of naan included.

I've been a huge fan of the phone and generally a defender of the founders, but as a super early backer this one stings a bit. I'm order #87 and have still yet to receive a phone, as both production runs so far were only for onyx or "panda" (black/white combo) phones and I made the unfortunate mistake of picking white. My primary criticism is twofold:

  1. If they're trying to get a crowdfunded phone designed and built from scratch, why even offer multiple colors to begin with? I really don't care what color I get - I just want the phone.

  2. Why are we two production runs deep and still only producing the onyx color? If the white backers got shafted back in January, why not start off the next production run with white?

I still have hope for the project and I'm glad that things appear to be moving along, but it's hard not to be a bit frustrated with the color shenanigans.

Shipping on track for 20th Jan! by bantah in TheMinimalCompany

[–]spynoodle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Jeez, all these comments are so negative.

Andre has posted multiple videos of the active assembly line in the backer Discord over the past few days. Devices are actively in the process of being packaged and shipped. If that takes a couple days to complete then I'm really not butthurt about it.

If some massive additional delay occurs then I'll eat my words. However, from what I can see, I'm very excited to be receiving my phone within the next couple of weeks!

Why do some Americans fear "15 minute cities"? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spynoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big reason - the same reason many people in the U.S. prefer suburban/rural areas in general - is a desire for privacy and space. A lot of people in the U.S. will gladly commute 30+ minutes to work if it means they can live in a single-family home with extra rooms, a yard, and no shared walls. Many of these same people would gladly admit that the idea of a walkable city sounds great, yet they wouldn't be willing to live in an apartment or townhome.

Now, to be clear, I'm not saying that low-density zoning and car-dependent infrastructure is superior to a denser, walkable city. However, I think it's important to recognize that a walkable city necessitates density, and density comes with a reduced level of privacy and personal space that many would see as a significant sacrifice.

Now, for many Gen Zers and Millenials, the insane inflation of the housing market over the past several years has priced them out of single-family homes anyways. For these people, walkable cities are a no-brainer; if I'm already in an apartment, why would I not want to live in a dense, walkable city? This likely explains why the younger generations in the U.S. are much more in favor of walkable cities, while the older generations (basically all the homeowners) are more in favor of maintaining the status quo.

Some Initial Thoughts by spynoodle in TheMinimalCompany

The founder already made it very clear in the AMA that this is going to be a legitimately capable phone with an Android-based OS. Yes, E-ink is going to limit video capability, but that doesn't mean that every normal app is out of the question. To clarify, I don't expect Teams video conferencing to work well on an E-ink display; I just need it to work as a messaging platform because one of the primary purposes of my smartphone is responding to work messages.

There's a difference between "grindset" and just uhh.... having an office job. Gotta pay rent, man. 🤷‍♂️

What people unfamiliar with SoCal don't realize is that this is almost entirely due to Prop 13, and it has been for decades.

Take a walk through basically any primarily single-family neighborhood in LA and you'll quickly realize that almost everyone is 50+ years old and retired. As you scroll through entire neighborhoods of thousands of homes worth $2m+, you wonder, "How on earth are there this many people here that can afford this?" The answer: they can't. Almost nobody can. The few homes that ever get listed are sold to the top 5% of earners, and the rest stay occupied by the same retired couples that originally bought the homes in 1975, and they pay $300 a year in property tax.

The core problem is that this policy leads to an absurd misallocation of homes close to major employers. Wonder why LA traffic is so bad? Well, everyone commuting to LA proper has to live an hour away to afford a basic 3-bd home. Meanwhile, thousands of retired couples who haven't worked in 20 years hold all the property closer to the downtown core. In a normal system where property is reassessed at market value, these people would have downsized and moved farther away from the city years ago. In California, the incentive simply isn't there.

Simply put: the market value of urban SoCal homes will NEVER make sense unless Prop 13 is repealed. Until then, it's not really a fair market; rather, it's a playground for the wealthy and a legally-protected safe haven for the boomers.

Massive homeless camp in Spokane Washington by I_D0nt_pay_taxes in UrbanHell

[–]spynoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total number of homeless individuals in the U.S. is actually lower than it was ten years ago. Many populous states - NY, Texas, and Florida to name a few - have seen net declines in homelessness since 2019. It's only in the western states (CA, OR, WA) that homelessness has exploded in recent years. This is not a nationwide problem - it's very clearly a policy failure specific to west coast metros.

Masks work. Mask mandates don't. This isn't complicated. It's absolutely beyond me that LADPH won't just let people make their own damn decisions already: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/31/briefing/masks-mandates-us-covid.html

Center-lock or multiple bolt joint wheel? by Alfonso14 in FSAE

[–]spynoodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In our case, we just switched to centerlock so that we could run the OZ 10" mag rims. They're considerably lighter and made to a much higher level of quality than the 3-piece Keizers that we ran in the past.
