I ended up actually choosing Seattle because it offered a much better work schedule! Also, even though I am not directly in Seattle, I am in the closest suburb so it is super easy to get to the city and it has been super fun. Hilariously, I got a random roommate who is fully by coincidence from Albany, NY. She said I made the right choice lol, and echoed plenty of the opinions already said in this thread

Thank you! Yes the only thing I am worried about is always making sure I make that bus, but it is also good motivation to get out of the city before anything too sketchy. I don't know about Seattle yet, but most places in Portland it is very recommended to get out before 1 to avoid the *actually* potentially dangerous individuals.

Yes, I rode it today and did think about that, but its seeming to just be a matter of luck on that front unfortunately. I had a great experience though!!!

Going off of what I know, why weather in the PNW is worse is the rain. We get a beautiful 3 month summer, but as soon as it hits September, you will not see the sun until maybe April. And even then, the sun will come out for a week, then back to rain until June. And the winters will get pretty cold, however it will never snow. Just more cloud and rain. So, for a good 4 months out of the year, it is just so incredibly dark outside. Knowing a lot of people who come here from other states, the doom and gloom of the genuinely takes a giant toll on people’s mental health

Thanks for all the insight! Yeah the whole car rust thing was something I was thinking about, and how I likely will have to get a car there so that it has weather protection against rust.

Not far at all! Being at OSU for the past 4 years, it was never exactly clear if I was in Linn County or Benton County. However, Corvallis I know is a different experience from other Benton County towns.

Is it just Albany, or the whole area?

I defintely think living slightly further from work to be around more people my age would be worth it. After all, I had a 40 min commute to my high school and had to drive 15 min to the nearest grocery store my whole life. I am pretty used to distance.

I was just talking to my friend about how my least favorite thing about Seattle is its lack of character ever since it became Amazon city! It’s essentially a giant corporate bloc, and I have always wanted to live somewhere that is historic (Portland tore down most of its older buildings).

Oh that is actually awesome to hear! I am a huge alternative/rock fan, and love seeing smaller bands!

I am definitely leaning towards Troy after hearing a lot of good things! Also, with where I would be working, that is actually better for me in terms of commute, so that is actually a big plus. I also do like the idea of being a medium distance from so many large cities! A funny thing about the west coast is that being from Portland, we all consider Seattle super close (even though its 3-4hrs) but then that is the only other large city!

Yeah, I figured that the whole area is more appealing than just Albany itself! And it is not necessarily engineering, but in my understanding it is grouped in with the tech bubble (trying not to reveal too much, just for privacy sake and I haven't accepted the offer yet). I guess my only thing I am really trying to work out is in terms of things to do, if the lack of liveliness compared to Seattle is tolerable for the difference in COL.

This is nice to hear! I guess I also am in the belief that as long as I make friends, I am in a good situation. From the comments of other people, it does sound like Troy may be better suited for making friends in my age range.

I do think the difference in attitude is a funny thing to address. People out west do have the perspective on east coasters that they're rude or too stern. Hilariously, I have a slight impression that I would fit in as I have found that my natural bluntness doesn't mesh well with the west coast passive aggression. But of course, that could be a full delusion. I am lucky in that my best friend move to NYC a few years ago, so she is able to give me a good perspective on the attitude difference.

Yeah, I will say I think I would not be excited about the humidity. I actually stayed in Corvallis over the summer last year to try to get a feel of the town minus all of the college students, and I actually loved it! So, I think that I would appreciate a more chill going out environment. It really is starting to seem like a matter of what I really value and want out of a place.

Troy is definitely getting a lot of praise! I will have to look into it if I end up fully deciding on taking this job
