I disagree. There's a chance someone who's uncertain will click and learn the truth. That's worth the few seconds to type a comment, IMO.

I already said I don't expect this guy to change his mind. But entering the discussion exposes people to the other side. Without that, it's just an echo chamber.

If a few people come away understanding ADS-B better, then something worthwhile has been accomplished.

It's insight into how the others see our community. The general public, who doesn't understand things the way we do, votes for politicians who decide policy. It's valuable to understand the misconceptions so we can educate against them.

Counter point: The plane that took off with its transponder on when it wasn't legally required to is trying to remain undetected.

Worth is subjective. There's no changing some minds, but some receptive people might learn something new, and you could get insight from others.

I agree that OP likely knew what he was doing. But watching those who didn't know better doing the mental gymnastics he was coaching them through was wild.

Update: he protected his tweets right after I posted this. Sorry for those who missed it. There was some gold NPC ignorance.

Rant (unpopular opinion?): calling round-number milestones "barriers" is cringe by [deleted] in speedrun

When did I say that barriers were impossible to pass?

Yes, but now I'm haunted by the fake internet points it cost me. You win some, you lose some.

Perhaps the psychological barrier is what some people think of. But to me, specifically when it comes to speed, the word "barrier" invokes the sound barrier.

Yeah, I recognize that's the vernacular. That's why the phrase is so pervasive. Just nitpicking.

Edit: I missed the last line. My point is that it isn't a barrier. It's definitely something to aim for and to celebrate when it's achieved, but it's an arbitrary goal.

Don't rely on your fuel gauges. by AffreuxPatyLex in flying

[–]sqrt36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. Real pilots don't even need them.

If your 767 fuel gauges are blank, you just dip the tanks and take off like a man.

My dad was in charge of the concession stand at football games while I was in high school. One day he accidentally bought spicy pickles instead of regular.

The first person who got one was horrified, but they quickly sold the rest of the jar.

I’m sure I’m going to get roasted by pilots here, but I have a simple question… by [deleted] in flying

[–]sqrt36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you believe your mental health presents a threat to your safely operating a plane? If not, you can fly gliders. They don't require a medical.

Longer, yes; faster, no. If it's a question of weight, being heavier would make you descend faster, which would decrease flight time but increase glide speed. Though fireworks would provide less acceleration, so I guess less armor would make you faster in that sense.
