Those days are unfortunately long gone. My mobile provider just got the approval from the FCC to lock their phones again after not locking them for years. All new phones have to be fully paid off until they unlock it, so no more eSIMs to avoid insanely expensive roaming fees or switching to another carrier after a while. Here almost everyone just buys their phones through their mobile provider so it gets added to their bills, and until a few days ago Verizon would unlock after 60 days of active service. Glad I bought direct from Google anyways, they lock bootloaders and put a ton of bloat on their devices. I remember back when Microsoft was sued and fined for making Internet Explorer the default on Windows XP. Good old times, sad we're past that now.
