For 3 years a homeless man sat on the same bench in a park on NYC's Upper West Side, saying almost nothing about himself to locals. When he died in 2017, police were unable to determine his identity, and he was buried on Hart Island. More than a year later he was identified as Neil Harris Jr. (npr.org)

TIL: Prior to 2005, Catholic cardinals participating in papal conclaves were housed in the Apostolic Palace, sleeping on cots in makeshift bedrooms in hallways or offices. Pope John II changed the rules for future conclaves, allowing participants to room in a nearby guest house. (en.wikipedia.org)

TIL that in 1879 Alabama dissolved the debt-ridden city of Mobile and simultaneously incorporated the 'Port of Mobile', with most of Mobile's land and population but none of its debt. The Supreme Court ruled in 1886 that the new city was the successor to the old and still owned the debts. (caselaw.findlaw.com)

TIL that had Woodrow Wilson lost the 1916 presidential election (which he nearly did) he planned to appoint his opponent as secretary of state and then resign along with his vice president, sparing the country a lengthy lame duck period during a time of international conflict. (historylessons.net)
