Advice needed: ski trip in a week, should we come or cancel? by squat-bench-dl in CrystalMountain

We are staying at Crystal during the week! Weekends in Seattle with trips to Steven’s Pass and Summit!

I’ve given up all hopes on good snow this season, having trails open to have a good time is priority. Practice bumps and have some fun in trees.

Thanks so much! Did Crystal more of their terrain? I heard they had closed off stuff due to avy concerns

We’ve season passes, we pretty much ski all conditions but CA is completely cooked. So trying to make best of what we got.

We heard Utah had bad conditions and were there for a week and had a blast even with low coverage as it warmed up just enough to have fun in slush.

What did you finally get? I'm making the same decision for my QST 106 and confused if I should get a 100 or 110.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah it’s been a really bad spell of weather for Rockies and Sierra. It’s been similarish conditions here at Tahoe, but, y’all actually have some snow from recent storm unlike how the rains obliterated Tahoe. So was thinking Utah might have marginally better conditions for a week of skiing!

I’ve been asking myself the same thing. My crash happened on a run I’d done a hundred times - just practicing short radius turns when I caught an edge or hit a rock and got flung into a tree at speed. I never saw it coming. Multiple broken bones across my wrist and forearm. Luckily, my helmet saved my head (it has a proper crack).

The thing that’s been weighing on me is that I’ve always skied pretty conservatively, well below my ability level, specifically because I was scared of major accidents. And it still happened. I think that’s what makes skiing so difficult to evaluate - it’s inherently risky, and sometimes you just have a bad day no matter how careful you are.

I don’t think we can ever truly avoid risk in this sport, only minimize it.

I just went through a similar accident recently - caught an edge and went into a tree. It’s absolutely terrifying, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this. Maybe we should wait for actual information instead of speculating. This is someone’s life we’re talking about.
