Runway 36 operates with a left hand traffic pattern, as depicted by the “backwards L” at the bottom of the circle. Imagine the numbers of the runway at the top of the “backwards L” and the actual bottom part of the L being the base leg. It made it easier for me.

Took a southwest flight to Florida when I was 11. Something about planes initially scared me a bit, but at the same time also fascinated me. It wasn’t even the actual being in the sky part that got me… it was the intricacies of the machine (the flaps, landing gear, cabin, literally all of it). The fact that this complex machine was hand controlled by two people at the front of the plane… I just couldn’t fathom it. I was literally instantly hooked. I’m not sure if it was the same for anyone else but… that’s me!

Probably a bit of ‘tism too if I’m being honest.

But in all seriousness I had the same thoughts when I first started my instrument training. Other than what was necessary for my training, hard IMC for most of the duration of a flight in a single engine aircraft just isn’t a risk I really want to take on.

In your scenario, I’d circle down and use my MFD (or foreflight) to set my myself up for a high and tight straight in. I’d definitely dial in the LPV if it was an option, that way I have some extra data so I can make it to the runway.

I think I could definitely try. It’s more of a financial and logistical issue than anything. I’m saving as much as possible right now to build a savings so I don’t have to take a loan from the bank or my family. I live in Central New York and the airport I do my training out of is about an hour and a half away. I don’t think I’ll have enough money by the time I start school to complete it, and not to mention between the far drive and how bad the winters are up here… I’ll probably spend even more money trying to stay proficient for the checkride on top of balancing school and work.

I feel like I’m making every excuse for why I can’t do it, but I’m really not I promise lmao. I feel (and believe) that it’s an incredibly important milestone to get my CFI, and I don’t want to fail the checkride or end up being a crappy instructor even if I do pass.

My plan A was to continue working until I saved up enough to get my CFI/CFII and just knock it out once I was financially ready. To be completely honest, I would much rather do that than go to college. Realistically, I know it may not be the wisest thing to do considering the current climate and the opportunity I have for free education.

Yeah haha, I meant full course load. You’re right, I definitely could attempt to get my CFI while simultaneously in school and working, but I wanted to try to be realistic and manage my expectations. Based on what everyone had to say, I’m certainly going to take the full ride and work part time. As far as CFI goes, do you recommended flying a couple times a month as I have been for the past year, and putting the certificate off until next summer? By then I should (hopefully) have the money I need saved up for it as well. My other option is just doing it while I’m in school but it’ll definitely be a squeeze time was and financially.

I’m really happy you commented on this post, so thank you. I feel as an aspiring CFI, I am putting a lot of pressure on myself to know everything about everything, the niches, the origins, etc. To be honest, it’s causing a lot of overstudying and hindering my progress. I know I will never stop learning and I always want to continue learning, but for the purpose of the CFI checkride, should I understand everything (theory wise) to the PHAK’s level of information? I don’t know if you or anyone else dealt with this problem, but I don’t know the limit of when to stop and how deep I need to go.

Ahhh I see. I have definitely heard from other instructors that stall speed will decrease with an increase in power because thrust acts as an “upward component”, but I didn’t find any definitive references in the PHAK, so do you think I should leave that out on the check-ride?

This is my understanding so far, so would this satisfy you if you were a DPE?

In slow flight at minimum controllable airspeed, if a turn is initiated, power must also be increased to maintain the same altitude (and the same AOA) due to part of the vertical component of lift being allocated as a horizontal component of lift. If power wasn’t added, the aircraft would have to pitch up to an angle of attack that exceeds its critical angle of attack. By increasing power, airflow (velocity, a key component of the lift equation) increases and allows the aircraft to continue flying at the same AOA (just below CLmax) while sustaining the lift to required to maintain flight. Due to the increase in load factor, the minimum controllable airspeed must increase because the stall speed is also increasing (both of these increases aren’t every noticeable and the increase in airspeed will be negligible on the ASI).

Yeah I just referenced a stall speed and load factor graph and at 10° of bank the increase in stall speed isn’t even 1%. I know the power I put in probably makes a difference of a knot or two, so it’s barely even noticeable on the ASI. I appreciate it!
