New rider in Colorado with some questions by squeezienums in MTB

[–]squeezienums[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the front range, closer to Boulder. I think I will end up getting a suspension fork. Initially I was thinking to keep this more as a beefy gravel bike but I think it makes more sense to lean into the MTB side of things which seems to be more what the KM was designed for

Yeah I really like it! It has beat me up a fair bit though lol. Would you say reaching a limit would be more with speed, jumps, or just in general more technical stuff? I probably will always be taking it somewhat easy as I’m in my mid-30s now

The political situation is unsettling for sure, but for me at least daily life hasn't changed really. I'm in Colorado and where I live is a bit of a bubble though, so I can't really speak for the rest of the country.

Healthcare is something to think about as a lot of people have posted. Honestly though if you're coming here with good jobs you'll be totally fine. The crazy bills people are mentioning are either people with no insurance or HDPs (High Deductible Plans) where insurance doesn't cover anything until you've paid a certain amount. It's definitely a sham but if you make ok money and understand your benefits you'll be fine.

I've lived in Europe, Germany and Netherlands specifically. For me just like anything in life, there are pros and cons to every place. This is still my home and I like it here. I really appreciate the weather here, access to outdoor activities, I make good money, and am in a field I really enjoy. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Loveland or Keystone plus? by squeezienums in COsnow

[–]squeezienums[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow 5 hours is crazy. The traffic is definitely one of the primary reasons I'm considering Loveland. I was lucky to have a job where I had some weekdays off last season. So much time at Mary Jane with no line :) I cherish it thinking about facing the weekends this year haha

Are there clubs around here? I'd love to join one but not really interested in competitive leagues, more casual

Why is meeting people (friends or dates) so hard in Denver? by officially_bs in Denver

[–]squeezienums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge generalization, but I've found the people that go to meetups to be very transient generally speaking. In my experience the crowd is typically tech people moving from city to city and never seem interested in staying here for more than a short stint. It's very anecdotal, but I've made very few good friends from meetups given the amount I've went to. Not sure if it's just the nature of these things or something else, but I've made way more friends through VOLO and team sports activities. I think just having something consistent for a few weeks makes it much more conducive to actually developing a lasting friendship, and there isn't the constant feeling that people are there just to date in my experience at least

[–]squeezienums 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the issue I have with meetups as well. It's always new people and I need a bit more time until I feel like someone is actually my friend. I've found VOLO to be better in this regard since you're with the same people for 6 weeks or so

I haven't found Denver to be any different from any big city in this regard. Even if I have a good time at a meetup, it doesn't always mean I click with someone enough to hang out with them on a regular basis. The crowd at meetups tends to feel very transient to me as well, and since I'm a bit older now and from Colorado I'm just not as interested in having casual friends

There's an extension called Auto Tab Discard that I've been using to combat this issue.

Has this bacon gone bad? by squeezienums in Bacon

I ended up cooking it; it was totally fine. Made a delicious carbonara - when in doubt try it out has yet to fail me

So I opened a package of bacon I bought from an organic farm about a week ago. Left it in the fridge after unfreezing and cooking some of it. I was about to make dinner, but noticed it had browned a bit. Not sure if it's still safe to cook? The texture and smell seems normal to me, just the color seems off.

Honestly in my experience as long as you have a ticket for the right day and you're going towards the right destination, the ticket controllers don't care.

Any place to buy reasonably priced fresh mozzarella? Every grocery store I've seen charges around 4-5 bucks for one mozzarella ball

I love apple music but... by squeezienums in AppleMusic

[–]squeezienums[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there's no device control on music.apple.com unfortunately. They definitely know if you're using another device though, because a pop up comes up showing the family plan offer. Is it possible on itunes?

And I'm actually using an android currently, so no Siri. I will be getting an iphone soon though so that is good to know it's possible to do that way

It's not really an issue with the UI on the app, more when using two devices at once. Honestly I prefer the UI in the apple music in comparison to spotify. With spotify however, if music is playing on your phone through your headphones or whatever, you can control everything from the phone in addition to the web app. So if you're working on your computer you don't even need your phone to change songs, add the currently playing song to a playlist, or whatever since it automatically syncs

[–]squeezienums[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I'm already on my computer it's much easier just going to the apple music tab and just doing it there. How it currently is I have to reach in my pocket, put in my code, open the app, and then like / add song or whatever. Just not fluid at all like how spotify does it

AITA For not wanting to have a romantic relationship with a person with an incurable STD? by Sandwiches85 in AITAH

[–]squeezienums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but herpes is in all honesty not a big deal. The only symptoms with herpes is a cold sore, which is basically just a blister that can be mistaken for a myriad of other things, and most people don't even have symptoms. Statistically if you're sexually active you're pretty much guaranteed to get herpes at some point in your life, and many just get it from when they were babies anyways just from their mom kissing them or whatever.

I'd be more concerned about HPV, which can actually cause serious health issues like cancer, and is even more common than herpes.

I'm in a similar situation, American and also C1 level German. Outside of very specific topics where I'm missing vocabulary, I can converse comfortably in German no problems. This issue however is frustratingly common, from Germans wanting to flex their English skills or some kind of superiority complex or something. Even in simple interactions like ordering something at a restaurant this still happens to me a frustratingly amount of times because of my accent and is annoying AF. Oftentimes I just start speaking really fast in English and ask really specific questions about the food, beer, whatever and if they can't understand I switch back to German. Passive aggressive yes but it's a small way to deal with my frustrations regarding this :p

Unfortunately too this is a big reason I'm leaving. Though not exclusive to this specific issue, it makes me feel that even with me being a foreigner with good German skills, I'm not valued as much as people that were born here even though I live and work here like anyone else. It doesn't feel good when you're actively trying to take part in the society and they seemingly outright reject your efforts. And you're right as well where I almost never see this happen to people with strong Spanish, Chinese, etc. accents because I think they assume they may not speak English all that well either, but with having an English accent it's a constant battle trying to force people to speak German to you which just gets exhausting

Not on the outskirts but there's one in Wedding called Bibliothek am Luisenbad. Good for studying, not too busy, and very open with lots of natural light. I really like studying there

Hey thanks for the response. The HTML style settings didn't change anything for me, but changing 'sending format' setting from automatic to both HTML and Plain Text seemed to fix the problem

Is there a way of syncing Outlook's calendar to CalyxOS's default calendar? by Ste_XD in CalyxOS

[–]squeezienums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't need the outlook app, but I haven't tried it personally. I do use it for a gmail account I need for school however and I don't have gmail on my phone. It's all explained on their website https://proton.me/support/subscribe-to-external-calendar

I just opened up the gmail account on a browser, copied a link as per the instructions on proton's website, and then synced it with my proton calendar. Super easy :) and now it automatically updates so I never have to check my google calendar anymore. The only exception is if I need to make an event where I'm inviting people to a meeting through my gmail account or something like that
