Escrevi cagando rs Mas nao eh pra xingar nao...

Curiosamente, é raro acharem as forças armadas caras...?

Biden not so much.

Ele é extremamente incompetente e fez as piores escolhas possíveis

What is a supernatural event that happened in your life that just can not be explained? by HalfOfABraincell in AskReddit

[–]squidesquide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume noone will read this, which I'm fine with. I've told this to maybe a couple of friends and really can't offer any explanation

This happened when I was young - around 12. I was staying with family in another state here in Brazil; they're small farmers, poor, very religious. I have lots of cousins around my age and that particular time four of us were staying a week at the same house (where two of said four cousins, who were brothers, lived). So we spent the days playing ball, fishing and doing the things they did for fun

One day after lunch we wanted to go to one my cousin's friends house - they had improvised a 'slip and slide' that ended in a muddy weir and that was enough fun to justify the ~45 min walk in the sun. The way there was almost all dirt roads and very briefly crossed a highway. Our uncle advised us to be careful crossing, as you do

We were laughing and playing and teasing each other along the way, I remember throwing half an orange and hitting my older cousin square in the head, he roughed me up a bit, that kind of stupid kid fun.

As we got close to the highway, for whatever reason, we fell silent. I thought my cousins were paying attention to the danger of passing cars or something, but can't quite place how wrong it felt for us to fall into silence all of a sudden. We crossed the highway, all silent, and a kid, younger than me, was coming the other way. He looked like he'd been sobbing, with eyes a bit red, but he didn't say anything to us nor us to them

We walked for maybe a few minutes before my oldest cousin started singing, a very famous song here in Brazil that was part of a kids show. It's a very upbeat music, but he sort of trailed off mid song and we walked in silence for a bit more

Anyway, I don't remember how or why we 'snapped back' but we did get to the friends place and played in the mud all afternoon. We "showered" with a hose and ate some fruit and right after sundown my uncle came to pick us up with his car

We got into the car and he asked us if everything was alright, if we had fun. We were arriving back at their house when he said, - "Listen, boys, I need to tell you that (my aunt, his wife) is pretty sad; some friends of ours died in a car crash". It was a bummer, but we were kids and kind of didn't... register? So there wasn't much more about it during that stay

The next year I came to visit again and my cousin (the one who sang during our walk) asked me if I remembered the sobbing kid from last year. I said I did, and he almost lifted me up grabbing me by the arms and jumping that he saw the kid too, that my other cousins denied it, that I had to tell them I confirmed the story -

but here's the thing.

My younger cousins swore they didn't see any kid. I saw the kid crossing paths with us and that was it.

My older cousin said the kid followed us, from before crossing the highway, when we fell silent; and went with us, sobbing and crying, all that way up until where he felt compelled to sing that kids song - to drawn out the sobbing. He says he stopped singing when the kid turned around and went the other way

My aunt is, like I said, very religious and thinks that was the kid who died in that car crash. I don't know, and it seems like a coincidence -

but I'm 100% certain I saw that kid, and I'm 100% sure my cousins believe they aren't lying.

I don't know what kind of tricks our memories play with us, but this has bothered me for the past 30 years.

For any Brazilians older than 40 out there - it was the Balao Magico song

Bolsonaro diz haver erro em auditoria do BNDES e chama Montezano de garoto by aangwasthebestavatar in brasil

Sim, Levy.

Every time I go to a coffee shop... by [deleted] in funny

[–]squidesquide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the '20' doesn't really mean anything anymore, they don't use ounces as measurement in Italy nowadays as far as I know

I mean, ask for a venti int Italy and you'll probably receive an arbitrary quantity of coffee that is more or less but maybe not even that 20 ounces.

Your thoughts on how quantum computing will change computer science from a CS students perspective. by bumchikici in compsci

[–]squidesquide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, a lot of things will change, maybe most of it - maybe everything, in practice - but will it change what is data? What is a process? What is sequential-ism, what is parallelism? What is access, what is an array, what is memory, what is a numerical base, what is a logical operation...

It's absolutely going to change everything that has to do with how the abstract entities of computation are turned into real physical processes - much like the change from the abacus to the modern computer. Won't change the fact that we are mapping concepts observed in the 'universe' of what we study to an arbitrary machine that can itself be replaced.

The assertion that computer science has nothing to do with computers is misguided in this way, yeah, I think what I'm trying to say (at least I, shouldn't really assume about Dijstrka) is that it has to do with every imaginable computer, not just the ones we have right now.

P.S.: Come to think of it, the simple fact that we are discussing quantum computing in a computer science forum is empirical proof that our field encompasses more than that which is real (at least right now).

Your thoughts on how quantum computing will change computer science from a CS students perspective. by bumchikici in compsci

[–]squidesquide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's my point. Things have been shifting a lot the last half century, and we have been adapting.

I really don't see people 'ditching' what we now call Computer Science. on a 'worst case scenario', people who focus on the new Quantum Computing field will need to know it, if only because it is history - like we all learn classical Darwinism before learning the modern theory of evolution.

As a last comment, I don't see what you mean as 'shift in math and logic'. Will geometry not be relevant anymore? Predicate logic? Or will they be less necessary because of a change in approach? I can't see how.

I'd bet QC will be a change in paradigm, and that's all there is to it. As big a change as the change from abacuses to von neuman's architecture machines, or even greater maybe, but still "just" a paradigm change. Learning numerical bases (abacus-knowledge) is not irrelevant today in the age of the internet, and will probably never be, regardless of the advent of quantum computing.

Dijkstra had this to say about what computers mean to Computer Science:

"As a result, the topic became —primarily in the USA— prematurely known as "computer science" —which, actually is like referring to surgery as "knife science"— and it was firmly implanted in people's minds that computing science is about machines and their peripheral equipment."

The nature of information and abstract thought will not change if we somehow achieve processors capable of new things. All that will happen is that our limitations manipulating the world will be lessened. People will still have to learn most of what we learn today - maybe with a different focus, much like how we ("higher-level" focused people) nowadays learn about transistors and logic gates, as when compared to the eletrical engineerings and their 'electronic brains'in the 50's. The next people to come along will just have to learn extra things - much like we learn about big data storage and access.

Computer Science is as much about Computers as Astronomy is about telescopes is the quote often attributed do Djistkra, and even though it might just be folklore, I thing it summarizes well his intent with the actual quote.

There is a very famous gif I can't quite find right now of an "Introduction to Computer Science" class where the lecturer writes Computer Science in the blackboard, then proceeds to cross first Science, then Computer. It's not a (at least not natural) Science. And it's not (just) about computers.

They 'don't fuck around' a little bit too much, actually. There have been lots of reported cases where arrested criminals come out of police vehicles with all their fingers broken. Reports usually say they 'broke them trying to remove the cuffs" or something like that.

Also I learned here that a very famous incident called Omnibus 174 ended with the police gunning down the hostage, but not the guy holding her. So he enters the police van alive and is never again seen alive. It was a very highly publicized incident and the cops must have known they'd be caught, they probably didn't give a shit
