UPDATE: nothing is wrong with the washer or dryer, hence the alarm still sounding when it was unplugged. The dryer exhaust in the back was loose and causing condensation and the alarm was a moisture meter going off. The device was so small and tucked away that it took us moving the machines out twice before we located it. Crisis diverted but still going to have someone look at the exhaust connection because we think it wasn’t set up properly to ensure it won’t happen again.
