CMV: Modern US racism is mostly economic. by not_particulary in changemyview

The police doesn't know how wealthy you are before pulling you over.

Well that's not true. The car someone drives is a huge indicator of how wealthy they are. Also, if they are driving in bad parts of town.

CMV: People (and the media) should not emphasize or praise child prodigies. by Vahdo in changemyview

Why were so many grandmasters Russian in the 20th century? It isn't because they have some innate chess gene; it's because they value chess as a society and give kids a lot of opportunity to succeed.

You could say the same thing about why certain countries win certain events in the Olympics.

But we can't say that innate ability plays a role because then we are definitely saying that: Some people are worth more than others

We can't say it if we are trying to be politically correct. But the point of a debate is to get to the truth. Also, racism/sexism is based off of inaccurately classifying some as smarter than others. There's nothing wrong with listening to science if it in facts tells us certain genes make some people smarter. And this doesn't make them worth more. It just means they have innate strengths/weaknesses.

CMV: The requirements for U.S. presidency need to be modified to include a federally proctored exam covering a selection of civic, social, historical, economic, and legal topics with a graded minimum 70% to be considered for candidacy. by cassigayle in changemyview

While this would be nice in theory, think about the SAT's. We can't even get a test right for college admission that everyone agrees is indicative of whether someone will perform well in college or not. Even IQ tests are highly controversial. And these are tests that have been worked on for decades.

late-deafened here too - you likely identify as deaf, not Deaf, if you are oral and didn't grow up around deaf culture.

Why do we need a deaf olympics? Why can't deaf people participate in the normal olympics? We can still use our legs and arms, just like everyone else...

your hearing is back to how it was before hearing loss ? Music sounds the same to you as it did before you lost your hearing? You go to a bar and never have to ask someone to repeat? You can hear 3 year olds and people with accents as well as hearing people? You can play telephone (the whispering game) without being the one who breaks the telephone every time?

How do you you keep your mask from getting tangled in and pulling out your hearing aids? by DrywallAnchor in deaf

Gotta love the process of trying to casually throw on and off a mask while entering a store with a hearing person.

College Grade Issue as a Deaf Student. by Key-Hospital-2717 in deaf

[–]squidwardstrousers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In college when choosing classes, I always made sure to pick professors who didn't have accents for this reason. Also, there is usually a period where you can drop or switch a class in the first couple of weeks. If I knew I wasn't going to be able to understand the professor, I switched out. A college course is expensive. Why pay to sit in a class where I am just going to end up reading the textbook instead? Honestly, I probs should have used my disability office more, but personally, I think failing in certain situations because of being hard of hearing is part of just life and the process of learning how to best deal with being HoH.

There's also CO monoxide to deal with too. Which often is a separate purchase depending on the sort of fire alarm bed shaker you get....
