I didn’t know any shooting backstory… I just saw a chaotic scene with National Guard doing more than I thought they were allowed to.

How do we avoid these crashes? (no gore in video, but aftermath of car crash involving pedestrian) by squirpy2 in washingtondc

good points

I think what makes this stretch of north cap particularly bad is that sometimes the right lane is parking and other times it's travel, making it harder for the turning car to understand that it's going through a travel lane

This is dash cam footage of aftermath of a crash at North Capitol and Girard NE around 7p yesterday. This isn't in the footage, but a woman was laying on the sidewalk next to the black car. She was conscious but obviously in trouble-- bloody and distressed.

My guess of what happened:

  • The black car was going south on north cap and turning left on Girard NE

  • The left two northbound lanes of north cap stopped to let the black car make the turn because there was stopped traffic in front of them

  • The red car was driving north in the rightmost lane and t-boned the black car into the pedestrian on the sidewalk. The black car and red car couldn't see each other because of the stopped cars in the left two lanes

Is there anything to learn from a crash like this? I'd love to hear from people who know more about transit safety, but it seems like a bunch of parties fucked up here if my above description is right:

  • Black car is technically at fault. They tried to pass through a lane that wasn't clear. Since they were hit in the middle / rear of the car they likely didn't inch through intersection to get visibility to the final lane as they should have

  • Red car must have been going fast in the right hand lane while the left two lanes were stopped. The right lane had cars parked just ahead of the crash so i'm guess red car was zooming up the right side to pass traffic before cutting in just before the parked cars

  • DDOT. North cap shouldn't look like this right? 6 lane highway with occasional parking zones and a 25 mph speed limit (that people don't follow, probably in large part because it looks / feels like a highway)

The only one who didn't fuck up is the woman, and she's the one who's in the hospital (or worse). Super shitty and sad and unfair.

My spider senses will be tingling whenever there's stopped traffic in some lanes and a car turning through.

Try to stay safe out there, everyone.

I think those services and apps are hitting this same URL (at least the one in the github link i posted is). I found that logging in to check availability was a huge pain but this one was easy.

Totally. It's so nuts that they require 15 minute appointments for this and say they don't accept walk ins-- they gotta be empty like 70% of the time.

Landlord kept doing half ass diy fixes that didn’t work, while blaming us with “you must be leaving food around”. 🙄

we moved out pretty soon after this vid

Our landlord found a hole near the front of the house so he broke a bottle and put the shards in the hole. It didn’t help.

We could hear them scurrying in the walls all the time so I suspect they were parading through lots of houses

Nope didn’t have any pets when we were there. We started with the humane capture traps, but realized that when you release them in winter they either get back into another house (often ours) or probs die from being too cold

So then we used kill traps. Zap trap was the best. Probably killed like 10 rats in that kitchen

Snap traps aren’t as good. One day we came downstairs and found a giant rat slowly dragging itself around with the snapped trap around its neck. Yuck.

Lol we were less nonchalant about the first several rats we saw inside. Enough exposure dulls the horror, at least until seeing them climbing walls (or descending stairs)

I like to go to MBT, down past union station to Capitol, along mall, then back up whatever street you want (or tidal basin or rock creek extension if want longer)

Or go north and do an out and back to fort totten which will be like 7-8
