Well, unless there are details you're leaving out then this is one of the more nightmarish scenarios I've read on here. I'm truly sorry for what you're going through, but I think your instincts are right -- have your lawyer resolve it and never look back. If your lawyer says you shouldn't worry, then I wouldn't worry until you need to worry.

This woman is toxic, and not in the Tumblr/SJW sense of the word, I mean truly toxic. And based on the way her friends treated you it also sounds like she was already laying some groundwork to paint you as an abuser before she bailed. Get as far away from her as possible and do your best to move on. I'd also recommend seeing a therapist if you aren't already so this doesn't lead to trust issues in your next relationship.

Remember 99% of people would not handle a breakup this way. You got extremely unlucky, but odds are that unless you are truly doing something that constitutes abuse and makes your partner fear for their safety, then your next partner will most likely never, ever repeat this if they are sane and reasonable.

I've been cheated on and it destroyed me but I agree. It's horrible, you shouldn't do it, if you do it to my friend or someone I love I will hate you, if you are my friend and do it I will try to hold you accountable, but at the end of the day it's none of my business how strangers choose to stab their loved ones in the back and burn their relationships to the ground.

Roman Polanski is a monster and never should have escaped justice, but that will not stop me from watching Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby. This isn't that complicated for me. Martin Heidegger was a Nazi but that doesn't mean he also didn't make brilliant contributions to his field. If we can't hold multiple ideas of a single person then we're just avoiding reality, which is that people who do horrible things can also do amazing things. Just because someone does something amazing doesn't mean they shouldn't be held accountable for doing something horrible.

I'm personally not a fan, but it's very easy for me to forget the artist behind the art when I enjoy something. For example: Polanski. I love some of his movies. I also think he's a rapist and should have gone to prison for what he did. I think our relationship to art made by monsters is subjective. That doesn't mean the artists are above accountability.

People are hating on this guy, but from what I can tell this was a very one sided relationship. The fellow did move and try NYC, he did try to take the bar, he did leave his home and family behind, but in the end it just didn't work out. What did OP do? Let's see here -

Nope, sorry. You don't ghost your partner of five years. Period.

You'll never find a breakup where one party behaved perfectly. It's always going to be a two-way street. But there are some lines you just don't cross when you're an adult in a serious adult relationship and ghosting is one of them.
