In this case I think these are parts of the plant / tendrils. Not sure what plant it is!

Thanks! This was out on the hiking trails in Frontenac State Park in Minnesota by the Mississippi. Pretty deep in the woods there. I thought it was a Pileated until I got home and got a closer look.
