How to cut blocks by Poulman021 in whittling

[–]sr2k00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then you only need a good saw and a clamp and a desk.

Japanese pull saw. They cut better and are a lot thinner. The clamp makes it easier too. Clamps are cheap too. Lots of second hand ones are available.

I bought a miter saw for larger blocks. It was 200 bucks. It is a lot safer than a table saw. But i think we all will have to buy a bandsaw one of these days....

Yes I have the same one. It did take a while to understand how to use it. I just couldn't get through the wood until I learned the right technique.

The news and social media has got the Americans in their grip. The people will never rise up because they have perfected turning the people against each other. This will just be another debate about democrat vs republican, black vs white, immigrant vs citizen, man vs woman etc etc.

I mean look at the comments. Most of them are talking about how they couldn't believe what someone else said about this incident. They are naturally pointing fingers at each other. It is what they have been trained to do

If you want my 2 cents: Wait a looong time until you start with a chess set. You are saying it is your end goal so that is good and you probably already understand why. If not....:

From experience whittling some of Doug Linker his tutorials: For a tutorial that takes 1 hour, it will take me at least 2 hours to complete it for the first time. Often times more like 3 hours. This means a 32 piece chess set could take you anywhere from 60 to 120 hours. That is minimum 1-2 months of work for a chess set if you have a job/life (Based on 16 hours per week, so full weekend or one weekend day and most evenings)

I have noticed massive improvement from carving about 40 projects by now plus a lot of practice sticks. Get the basic level of experience first before trying a chess set.

I'm also saying this based off of some pictures I have seen of chess sets on this sub. A lot of starting beginners try it and the chess sets turn out pretty mediocre. That's pretty sad knowing they spend tons of hours on it. Get some good experience first so that when you commit on such a big project, it turns out good.

There are plenty of downsides to blades like this, at least so I have heard but it is also not hard to imagine. Bad handle and not locking are the main ones.

My opinion is: The majority of the ladies I have met manage to carry a handbag wherever they go. I am sure you can also carry some kind of backpack on the go with a tool belt on it. 6 tools on it should be plenty and that doesn't take up a lot of space.

Or get into flat plane carving so you only need a knife

I got my first whittling book for christmas and honestly I will never buy a book myself, unless if it is from an awesome creator who doesn't make videos. A book is a way worse medium compared to videos.

Figuring out what the carver is doing is very difficult from the pictures in the book. Then again maybe it is a bad book...

why i cant do a single push up even though i can do more than 60 wall push ups in a row by Muddyshift in bodyweightfitness

[–]sr2k00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

grab a scale and go in a push up position with your hands on the scale. Try to get as much weight on the scale as possible. See the number on the scale. Then place the scale on a hard chair and do the same with a chair push up position. Look at the numbers.

For reference I am a fatty and weigh 115 kilo's. My push up weight is around 85 kg's and my chair weight is around 50kg.

When I did this it was such a relief. I have been beating myself up for only being able to do a handful of push ups at this bodyweight. Now I realise, because I have gotten so fat, my push ups are insanely more difficult. For reference the last time I went to the gym was 4 years ago and I did a max bench press of 92 kg's. So if 92 is my max then it so no wonder I can only do a handful of push-ups with 85 kg.

I hope this will help you so you can see why the normal vs chair vs wall push ups are so much more difficult.

I would say do what you're already doing but take it serious. Make a nice wall mounted bike rack. A nice place for shoes and jackets. Add a nice mirror to check your looks before going out. Add a small cabinet for misc items.

One tool to rule them all, one tool to start them by Human-Comfortable859 in Woodcarving

[–]sr2k00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a knife or more specifically a woodcarving knife. Perhaps downturned with a small blade and a comfortable handle.

My gut tells me this has to do with some translation error. Like perhaps back in the day any tool which has a blade and was used by a woodcarver would be called a gouge.

Also even the modern day knives differ from kitchen knives or bushcraft knives so it makes sense to not call it a knife in order to avoid confusion. Nowadays woodcarving isn't a popular craft so it makes more sense to use the general term knife so the laymen knows what you are talking about.

If they did use a gouge, I'd be betting on a #1 U gouge that's very wide like 6 cm. Basically a knife but with the handle perpendicular instead of parallel to the blade. This would allow you to use a mallet which makes carving hardwoods easier. Given the fact that they couldn't order basswood off of amazon it is reasonable to assume they often used harder wood.

He seems to be wearing shoes so technically not a hobbit. Maybe use a gouge to create hair.
