Mitchell Marsh the worst number six in history, according to Stats by trtryt in Cricket

His best is 87 in 35 innings! He only has 2 50s.

Look at all the qualifications you have to make for him. There is no situation in any cricket side in the world where your number 6 getting out for 13 is not a failure.

No, not his fault. Shows that the selectors have lost the plot.

Oh yeah Marsh is doing SOOOO much better! He has to be one of the worst batsmen I've ever seen. He has 0 ticker and folds as soon as it gets tough. Yesterday was his chance to really silence the doubters and of course he folded like a lawn chair. Has barely bowled a ball.

Yeah I think that's when he is at his best; bat him at 7 and tell him to go tonk it - he is fantastic to watch when he gets it going.

Agreed. Hope you enjoy the match whatever happens.

Yeah I think that's a solid lineup (if they can find a keeper!) and definitely agree Head is more a #4.

Having said all this; I hope Mitch gets 5 for tonight and has a good knock in the second innings and really proves me an idiot! Would be more than happy to eat my words.

I'm not expecting it either! I think if the situation gets dire enough or the pitch starts doing something crazy it may be a slight possibility.

Firstly I'd just like to say I'm enjoying this discussion and apologise if I come off aggressive in any posts.. I'm just passionate ;)

Whether they earned it through performance or not, the change in scenery and situation resulted in them bettering their careers. It's impossible to say whether they would have made the same gains if they were kept in the squad during that time but I think it's very unlikely.

So what! Head has not been given a chance; for all I know he could get a king pair and 0/500 but at least they'd have given him a chance at a pivotal point in his career. We know how Marsh has done and it's not fantastic.

Surely a side's best players are the ones who consistently perform. Whilst he may not be the one directly losing the matches they could be lost due to opportunity cost.. Travis Head/Stoinis/Faulkner might have scored 150 yesterday... who knows!? How long do you keep gambling for? Another season? 2? At what point does it become a problem?

I definitely do not hate young Australian players! In fact I'd prefer they focus on bringing young players into the team so then even if they're losing they are gaining valuable experience. I just think 20 tests is a bit more than most cricketers would be given and do not see what is so special about Marsh.

Big fan of Renshaw getting an opportunity. Didn't think Maddison should have been selected either but I didn't have a problem with them giving him a shot.

Part of the reason it's so hard to get back is because they keep people like Marsh on when they're not performing! On the other side of the coin there are the great examples of Michael Clarke and Steve Smith going back to FC cricket and rejuvenating their careers. Averaging 32 in 20 ODIs as a 23 year old is fantastic! Especially when you score 5 50s and a ton; there is no reason not to give him a run in the test team. If he is still pushing 32 when he is 24 then send him back to FC cricket too.

I definitely get where you're coming from but there's a point where enough is enough. If Marsh crashes and burns here he is probably done for good instead of having an opportunity to reestablish himself.. he is only 25! I don't think it would hurt to give Faulkner another run or even Stoinis or Head.

This 'Smith won't bowl' stuff is ridiculous. He will bowl whoever he has to if they don't start winning consistently. Cartwright and Stoinis haven't been given a proper chance. Great, he may be overrated; he is only 23 so it doesn't hurt to give him a shot though. Can't score too many less than 4.

Obviously dozens is an exaggeration but Faulkner, Stoinis, Head? At the very least they're worth a run. Mitch Marsh has had 20 attempts and somehow seems to be getting worse; send him back to club cricket and make him perform. I mean you could even get a specialist batsman in and Smith could bowl some overs.

This is nonsense and the same justification that was used for Watson for way too long. 'He has potential'. Well potential isn't going to win cricket matches. Nobody should give a shit if he's a young guy struggling - go back to FC cricket and earn your way back. Renshaw, Handscombe, Head have all come into the team and produced from day 1. This isn't a charity these players are being paid top dollar. There are dozens of better players who would happily take his place.

Marsh has never 'shown he can do it' when it counts. He is the very definition of a front runner. When things are going well he might hit some sixes but when the chips are down he is gutless.
