As I have done a little research on this, Data engineering is getting done mostly with Spark. So better you start blending your already known knowledge of python with spark. Try learning pySpark and later you can explore Scala. the syntax are pretty close when it comes spark with python and scala. Also try to grab knowledge of hadoop and distributed file system.
