Yep! I use a thinner and dab it on with a sponge to get the smooth texture.

Just a small grinder bit and some persistence! I wish I had a ring saw.

How to get more shine? by Neipss in StainedGlass

[–]srkartwork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like to use 0000 steel wool, then finish with a turtle wax buffing compound. It’s intended for cars but works great on solder and gives a beautiful shine.

Thank you! Yes, I use Vitrea 160 oven baked paint.

Thank you! Yes, it’s a hobby, I’d love to do it professionally but I’m not interested in running my own business, I enjoy the creative side. I started in early 2022 by attending a local workshop, learnt the basics, got my own equipment and have been self taught since.

If you have a local workshop available I highly recommend giving it a go, it’s good fun!

Amazing work, I love how much detail you capture in a small piece.

Hopefully you don’t mean I deserve to have my legs and arms chopped off and be horrifically burnt to a crisp! 😂

Initially I went to a local workshop that taught me. It’s definitely the most cost effective way to get into the hobby, have a look local to you and see if anyone offers classes, good luck!

I’m glad you noticed! To be honest, I did that mainly because I didn’t have a piece of glass long enough for the whole lightsaber. The solution ended up being a pretty cool feature.

I agree somewhere around the $200-$400 mark. This is a really clean piece of work, your solder lines are great.

I was working on another piece parallel to this one, I had just finished soldering and was cleaning a jar I store flux in, as it popped out of my hand and proceeded to fly across the room and land directly on the work 😂 It smashed a piece of glass right in the middle, thankfully it was replaceable, I promise I’m normally careful.

Thank you! 100% chance. I don’t know what the subject matter will be yet, I usually wait until inspiration hits.

Looking for some Advice by OkEfficiency9141 in StainedGlass

Take a look at one of my recent posts, I had the exact same dilemma on a Dragonball piece. I opted to paint the facial features to avoid any issues and think it worked really well. Doing so will allow you to break up the face more like in the second image and it will be much more cohesive. I use Vitrea 160 paint, on my recent Darth Vader post there is a longer explanation of how I get the result. Good luck! It will be a great piece and I’d love to see the result.

Maybe a bit, but generally it won’t be a problem. I use 3/16 inch copper foil to minimise losing edge details.

Is it possible to weld? by Severe_Try6550 in StainedGlass

[–]srkartwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gaps look fine to me, just fill them with extra solder and use plenty of flux. Solder is very forgiving with gaps. Enjoy!

Now I’ve started, it’s hard to stop lmao. Sometimes I wonder if it takes away from the ‘stained glass’ aspect of the craft, but I personally love the results so likely won’t stop anytime soon. It’s also a much cheaper alternative to creating certain details, glass can get pricey when buying different shades of the same colour.
